For a start see if there are any photos and downloaded files/documents on there you don't need. My phone has something in settings somewhere for clearing up unnecessary files
I had this problem with my former Samsung. I had to clear the cache and unnecessary data on all applications, plus install an sd card for photos. It never helped enough.

how do you delete applications you don't want...
do you mean uninstall ? hold on the app you want to delete, drag it to the top of the screen choose uninstall hold it over that, thats what my android does

will this free up space on the mobile, i have deleted all photo's as they are backed up on my computer.
how do i tell that i have more space on mobile....
Has you phone got the facility for a mini memory card Emmie?
What make and model is your phone?
unwanted messages can be deleted?
on my Samsung I select Settings then Device care. Have a look at that- it tells you a% for how optimised it is and tells you the amount of storage used/free and memory

no mini memory card, Samsung Galaxy J3. about three years old. have very few messages... but loads of google e mails
Is google your email provider? I have it as a second email and it really sends some rubbish, if it isn’t then clear the inbox also go to your settings and clear the cache of cookies etc
You can delete apps you don't use. Apart from that, not a lot. I use AppMgr III to move dome to the memory card. Aside from that it's probably new phone (with oodles of memory) time.
Can you back up your e-mails to somewhere off the phone then delete them from the phone ?

My Samsung is Galaxy but a later model. If yours has the Device Care option within Settings then you can see your % optimisation and then click the Optimise button. I'm back to 100% with lots of free space. I'm not sure clearing emails will make much difference
settings go to storage & usb, click on internal storage, cached data, wait till it loads up, click on it and delete by ok
