Conservative Northamptonshire County Council is bankrupt. Makes Liverpool in the 80s look tame in comparison. Such is their gross neglect, that they have had to issue a Section 114 Notice.

as far as I know, the only council that's gone bust is Northamptonshire, which was Tory.

Indeed they are. All local authorities (including Parish Councils, County Councils, Metropolitan Boroughs, regional Assemblies and devolved "governments") should be abolished. There is no need for them, they serve no purpose, they are an unnecessary expense and their functions should be subsumed into local executives running under devolved powers from Westminster.

Wow, that is a terrible idea.
Like taking schools out of LEA, and instead running them from Westminster, so we get a load of bad Islamic schools.
We should get local democracy, not control by Westminster, but by the people who are actually using the schools, hospitals, community buildings etc, where you live.

Candidates are selected by the local constituencies.
They tend to select the person most likely to win the seat whether they are male or female.
If there was any positive discrimination at the last election [not sure there was any] then it is mot apparent in the current parliament.
