"The number of men dying from prostate cancer has overtaken female deaths from breast cancer for the first time in the UK, figures show"

So, is it now time for the spending on this pernicious male cancer to be increased ?

Thank you Sqad. Specialist sent me for a biopsy due to a PSA of 7.When I went for a follow up appointment I saw a different consultant who told that a PSA of 7 was not particularly high in a man of my age.
Considering the pain caused by the biopsy, done without a local, I was more than a little miffed.

I think that the NHS should imitate a nationwide program to make men and boys more aware of their possible health issues.

A few years ago, my own Doctor got together with other GPs and held a rugby film evening at the local Rugby club. They then had an opportunity to give the lads assembled a little chat !

It was a limited success but was never repeated....pity.
Thanks Sqad. Treated at St James in Leeds which I believe to be one of the top Oncology centres in the UK. So maybe I was fortunate to be treated there from what you say.
//But men are traditionally not very good at their own health issues, and its something that all of us need to address. //

Apparently about 1 in 5 men don't know they have a prostate!

Absolutley, but unfortunately mwn are not equal when it comes to cancer spending and testing.

IMHO all men should be offered the PSA and finger test annually at a minimum. Granted it is not perfect but it is a start and if nothing else raised awareness.

My Grandfather dies of it and my father died of it (not just with it). Watching my Father die of it was horrible and he was in terrible pain for some time. But I have only been able to get a test at private check-ups. Wrong, very wrong.

What tests did you have done - if you don't mind me asking ?
It was PSA and the finger.

Not brilliant but it is something. MRI's are of course prohibitively expensive. A company I used to work paid for it.
Thanks for replying ymb
So did you have a further investigation with an MRI scan as well ?
