It is almost impossible to buy fruit and veg by the kg as everything is wrapped in plastic....Anita Roddick used to stand at the check out and remove packaging and leave it there....If we all did this then supermarkets would be forced to go back to allowing us to buy 2 potatoes , for example, rather than 4 or 6...that would save us having food go off and avoiding the...

No. We have to start somewhere.
Better, yes, but convenience means we'll need natural alternatives. Can't see their store example being popular with most. Plus we already have to find a way to deal with the plastics out there. Going to be a long haul over centuries.

the government has promised to do what it can but come on 2042, that is a long way off, we must do something now.
Now is the beginning, it's a huge undertaking.

maybe, but the global community is spoiling the world and its wonderful animal, plant and wildlife, including dumping million of tons of waste into the oceans.
Every journey starts with a single step. Each and every one of us can play a part - don't use plastic bags, recycle when possible, buy from a butcher or baker rather than a supermarket (they use paper not plastic). Could go on as I'm on my hobbyhorse but will leave it at that.
There is no reason this should take 24 years.
The Government are kicking it into the long grass.

If there was the political will, a 50% reduction in 5 years, and a 100% reduction in 10 years.

We use 82% less plastic bags since the Government introduced legislation. Unfortunately they were shamed into introducing it because the Welsh and Scottish devolved Governments had already done it and seen instant reductions. Perhaps the Welsh and Scot should lead again, to where the UK Government are reluctant to go.
‘the global community is spoiling the world and its wonderful animal, plant and wildlife, including dumping million of tons of waste into the oceans’

The global community. That’s all of us then. Stupid phrase.

Your comment demonstrates the need to do something NOW.
Cannot disagree..... it is imperative that we start to rid our lives of plastic, particularly when it is used in food and drink packaging. Besides poisoning the World we are ourselves being poisoned by the deadly chemicals that leak out of the damned stuff.

we are all guilty of waste, and the fact that what we think is going to landfill may not. That we can all try a little harder in our recycling. But its up to governments to really get the ball rolling, but it's a big disappointment that ours has said by 2042 we will be almost free of plastic - just not good enough.
Maggiebee I have no decent local baker and my local butcher is also rubbish AND uses plastic packaging.
// Apple was able to redesign iPhone 7 packaging to use 84% less plastic, the company revealed in a new report on its forestry operations.

Because Apple sells over 200 million iPhones per year - and each one has bits of plastic packaging, which usually go straight into the trash - these tweaks have prevented tons of plastic from ending up in landfills. //

Unfortunately most Corporations do not take the environment into consideration when designing their packing, and instead go for cheapness. Legislation forcing them to use less plastic is needed. There already are alternatives, so it is only penny pinching stopping them reducing plastic use.
No, it's never too late.

The problem is we have to ensure we don't end up self flagellating whist the rest of the world continues using cheap disposable plastics. Most of the plastic they are banging on about in the sea comes from the big rivers of India and China. Us stopping putting cucumbers in a condom wont change that.

But it will stop me moaning about it!!
Question Author
that is why i said globally, we are all responsible, and i never understood why cucumbers have to be wrapped in plastic.
We fill our wheelie bins (well I do) with recyclable papers, plastics etc but then read that it just goes into landfill for various reasons best known to our councils.
No, it's been shipped to China!

Probably to be thrown in the Yangtze :-(

coylus
indeed i totally believe that, our trucks come along empty our recycle bins into them without being separated. Perhaps they are at the other end, i would hate to think it all ends in landfill.
Question Author
china are going to stop taking much of our waste, or so i read last week.
