Did anyone see the news from New Orleans about 3 officers beating up a 64 year man? They absolutely beat the s**t out of him and he was in a pool of blood because they say he was drunk, armed and refusing to obey police officers' instructions. What they didn't know was they were being filmed by a news crew. The man wasn't drunk, wasn't armed and is partially deaf. You may not be surprised to know that the man was coloured and the police were white. That is one fact that is for certain.

Yep they said he was drunk...The gentleman hasnt touched alcohol in 25 years.

Whats crazy is they have pleaded Not Guilty to battery

Yet the pics Ive seen clearly show them beating the hell out of him, whilst hes standing and when hes been on the floor.

It all seems to have stemmed from the fact that one of the police officers took offence to the man saying he was rude for interupting his conversation with another policeman.

That makes for some interesting reading. God job the film crew was there, and didnt back down even when they were being threatened by the police

agree with the above post. Let me tell you though, as an American I can honestly say that you do not want to mess with the po-lice. They are messed up! Too much ego and access to a firearm do not mix!

My younger sister is regularly pulled over and hassled by police because of the car she drives - a classic impala that may flag "gang member" to the them. They exist on another planet where PC rules do not apply.

I know I'm not meant to comment, but I personally see a certain irony in the use of a racist term in the question/debate starter.  One is no longer "meant" to use the word "coloured".

If the video through the link thread is it, then it is cleary inconclusive. Yes it shows the man being punched but what it doesn't show is the build up, the verbals, any other people the "perceived victim" had, proximity to weapons, his history. On that evidence alone there is not a jury in the States nor the UK who would convict.

If it is conclusive and other evidence becomes known then clearly the officers are in for the boot and no doubt a prison sentance. Officers of the law should be whiter than white (no pun intended!)

I think the 64 year old being black is irrelevant. No one comments on the officers who were filmed looting were black. So it is just as daming to says New Orleans are racist as the looters being black.

I envisage the officers will play the stress card with the storms and whatnot if it goes any further.

However, in defence of the officers before I have all the facts, remember Rodney King? If you download the FULL tape he was NOT a victim. He was a known drug dealer pimp who had recently tried to steal the officers gun. After being struck with a police baton he continued to try and escape.

A separate question (though linked) is the fact US officers carry guns. I read about 80% of shot officers are shot with their own gun. All I can say is in unarmed combat whilst in the army I did everything I could possibly do to protect my side arm. If that meant hitting a 64 year old 10 times on the head I would. To tell you the truth I would kill them. I know warzones and New Orleans are not the same but I am sure it will be a consideration in their defence.

Overall holding back judgement until the whole video is seen.

in America its OK to use "people of colour" to refer to hispanic, asian and black folk.

Am i right in thinking though, that the american term "Asian" primarily refers what we call "Oriental" or "Far Eastern" i.e Japs, Chinese etc?

You are absolutely correct Ward-Minter.

We do not refer to Indians or Pakistanis as "Asian". We just call them "Indian" and "Pakistani". I was so confused when I got to the UK, let me tell you!

Still ironic that a UK poster on a UK site used a racist term to make a point that was part about police brutality and part about race related violence.  Perhaps we should try to recall that it's not US who should decide the terms, but the people we refer to.  Just as women should be allowed to choose how men address them, and indeed, whites should choose how to be referred to too.

But then no matter what I say, 10CS will lay in, and also of course be right, so there's no point really is there?

Just can't help yourself JB can you?  Not taking sides here but if peace and harmony is to continue why don't you just take your own advice and stay of 10's thread!

sorry jan-bug, but where the incident took place - AMERICA, race is very much a live issue. And taking into consideration American terms for race is therefore a viable contribution to the discussion.

i don't think 10clarion used a racist term. my gramma says "coloured" and she's chicana - mexican american. as do all people i've met belonging to her generation.

its unfortunate that societies need these terms to distinguish one from the other - but its reality and where racial abuse/discrimination takes place ( just like the incident 10clarion brought to our attention) we need them to clearly see what happened and how to address it.

So it's ok for non-whites to be racist!?  Right - I've obviously landed on an alien planet - so I will leave.

Nice to see that other ABers support 10CS's bullying and in fact join in.  I bet you're proud of yourselves.

It was merely an observation.  And one I was perfectly entitled to make.

Pot kettle BLACK.

Or as you would say in your RACIST little world... Pot.  Kettle.  Coloured.

You obviously feel strongly about racism, as I do too.  Difference is, I make the effort to express it in unoffensive terms.

Giving 10CS the excuse of using an American term is just daft.  He/it might not have meant to be offensive, fine, but he/it was definitely out dated, and I don't see the harm in raising that.

I don't claim to know it all, 10CS, that is YOU that does that.  You're like a child with your fingers in your ears shouting LA LA LA.  You can't accept it if someone agrees with you 99% but points out one tiny thing. You still have to try to take them down.  Absolutely pathetic.

non-whites do not have the right to be racist, but using a racist term (or what may be considered a racist term) does not a racist make. maybe we are too quick to call people racist nowadays?
chill out JB.

I'm just going to go and have a lie down as I seem to agree with Ward-Mister especially with his remarks on Rodney King.

Until the full FACTS come out (as oppose to statements by the victim and video that may be taken out of context) it is difficult to comment.

Sorry Ward-Minter - got your name wrong again - sorry - obviously not feeling well. Lieing down now

I am thinking of moving to 12 Clarion Street. Is it a nice area? We could be neighbours.
