Why Do Labour Despise The Middle Earners So Much?

The left of Trotsky, Mad John McDonnell, has said the 'rich' earning over £80,000 will be taxed at a higher rate than others - John Ashworth this morning said we are asking (as if it would be a choice) that those with the broadest shoulders in society contribute more.

The broadest shoulders comment really irritated me because those with a broadest shoulders already proportionally contribute more to society as it is, and those with the broadest shoulders will in the most part take less out of society, so why do they want to squeeze them even more?

I would not describe somebody earning £80,000 as rich - and I find it interesting that McDonnell has chosen a threshold that is just above most MPs salaries!

Contrast what Labour have pledged, with what the Tories said in the run-up to the Election in 2015, They said then that they wouldn't increase NICs, but in the Budget earlier this year, that is exactly what they did.....increase NICs !

Of course, they had to make a u-turn on that issue, and have yet to explain how they are going to fill the funding gap left by the u-turn.

Or to put it another way, if you want to see the Country driven to the brink of bankruptcy yet again, it is our Party-piece after all, vote Labour.
Mush....do you want our pubic services to be funded properly or not ?

Much was made of Abbott's mistake the other day, but very little was debated about the issue. Under the Tories, Police numbers has shrunk by 20,000 since 2010.

Apparently those earning £80k and more are in the top 5% of earners in the UK (I'm surprised the % amount is as low as that, but let's assume for the sake of the argument this it is) and therefore if this is about raising additional revenue, would it not make more sense to increase the tax rate of the vast majority of tax payers and increase the rate for those earning less than £80k?

Why should people who earn in excess of £80k have to shoulder the whole burden?

Seems incredibly unfair to me.
//Mush....do you want our pubic services to be funded properly or not ? //

have I said I don't want them funded? I just want to know why the armed forces have been specifically excluded.
Deskdiary....who ever said taxation was fair ?

If public services for 100% of the population, can be funded properly, by modestly increasing the tax burden on 5% of the population, then just what is wrong with that ?
The proposed increase in NI only applied to the self-employed. I don't know what % of people fall into that category but I'd hazard a guess that it's considerably below 50%. Yet another example of Labour spin.
Like one of your idols Abbott your maths clearly is not too strong.

It cannot be a modest increase if you want to raise any reasonable sum.

//Anybody on AB in the £80k + bracket? //

This time next year ....
I think that Mikey is Abbott's secret boyfriend. Their arithmetic skills are certainly on a par.

Typical Labour, let anyone fund it but us!!
The Tories lied over no increases to NIC....fact.

One thing I don't quite understand is, if there are only 5% of our population that is classed as "middle income earners" what are the other 95% called ?

Indeed youngmafbog.

If Labour wanted to raise real money, they'd increase taxes for all, not just those they consider "rich".
Raising taxes makes people demoralised.

When tax over 150k was introduced I cut my hours.

When the personal allowance was cut £ for £ over 100k I stopped stressing myself by traveling everywhere and working long hours. Net result to the IR was a net cut.

In addition out of that 5% there will be a significant number who would be able to move away and work or empty an accountant to pay even less.
The lumpen proletariat, to be screwed for every penny to fund he lifestyle of the socialist élite.
//or empty an accountant //

isn't that back to front, ymb - don't accountants empty you, normally?
Desk diary....that is the way that Tories raise extra revenue....by increasing taxation for everybody. Labour doesn't do it that way, and that is the choice that people will be have in June.

To have increased taxes under the Tories, or for only 5% to have increased taxation under Labour.
The term 'middle income earners' is a bit fluffy.

The 5% includes the 'Top "top" earners' too!
^^ That was to Mikey @ 12.41.
