After years of faffing about, at last this is being built. I never thought we would see the day !

For the foreseeable future there is NO alternative to Nuclear energy. We are just 20 years too late in building new Nuclear plants. Excellent. Lets hope it keeps going.
i didn't think you would be in favour?

Emmie....I have always been in favour of nuclear energy !

When I was boy, in the 60's, I lived near Hinkley, and our science teacher took us for a trip there, when they were building B station.

Unless we do something about electricity generation in Britain, one winter day we are going come home, throw the light switch, and nothing will happen. Nuclear needs to be part of an overlall plan.

Hinkley C should have been half way built by now, and would have been, if successive governments, of both political hues, had pulled their fingers out, instead of fannying around.
its being built by EDF isn't it? my energy company, so will we see future Nuclear power plants, as you say successive governments have been messing about for far too long.

There is an answer to this sort of thing. Britain used to lead the world in nuclear power station construction, and could do so again. Instead, we prefer to get foreigners in to do the job instead.
perhaps its the fear of the unknown, many people are not in favour of nuclear power, but what's the alternative.
For the foreseeable future there is NO alternative to Nuclear energy.
We are just 20 years too late in building new Nuclear plants.
As Mikey says we used to lead the world in nuclear energy. The UK totally abandoned its nuclear program back in the 1970s.
Now we don't even have a training program for nuclear engineering let alone anyone able to build a nuclear power plant. There are only 3 countries in the world that can now build a nuclear power station
Russia, France and China. The Russian design is considered out of date and unsafe so that leaves France and China. Our new station is being built by a French / Chinese consortium.
We abandoned nuclear power due to the very successful
'Nuclear No Thanks' campaine of the 1970s, which in turn was a follow on from the CND campaine of the 1960s. The Nuclear No Thanks campaign was based on the totally false idea that nuclear power stations were a secret way to produce material for nuclear bombs, if fact the technology is completely different .
The governments of the time however were not sufficiently knowledgeable to realise this and gave in to the 'Nuclear No Thanks' campaine by cancelling the entire nuclear program.
We now have a major shortage of generating capacity and a cold winter could see us having power cuts.
Here is the 'Grid Watch' site which shows you from minute to minute how much electricity the UK is using and how much is generated from each source.
http://www.gridwatch.templar.co.uk/
You can see how much Solar power and wind power is being produced at any time. Solar will be at its maximum about now and you can watch as it drops to zero when the Sun sets.
It's interesting to look at the grid watch site and see how little electricity is produced from coal just 1.7% at the moment. Solar is now just over 4%, over twice as much as coal!
Good !
Question Author
Eddie...thanks for such an informative link....very interesting.
was it French or Chinese cement that they used?
Good (although I already knew it was about to come to fruition because on of the managers there has bought my friend's house on Exmoor). Can we pull down the wind farms now please?
Question Author
I don't think it matters DTC, as long as it doesn't have any carrots or peas in it !
237
i wish we could pull all the wind farms down.
Question Author
Emmie...they are part of modern life, just like telegraph poles, pylons, and pretty any else man-made.

There are loads of these off the A30 in Cornwall, and I think they look magnificent.
rather not see them thanks, i can't abide them, on land or out at sea.
Emmie if you click on the 'Box' for each energy source in the Grid watch site I posted you can see how much energy each is producing.
Wind power now contributes around 30% of the total ( when the wind is blowing). When there is no wind you can see on the grid watch site how the CCGT (Gas Turbine) power output rises to compensate.
If there were no wind turbines then we would be burning more gas to make up the difference.
Mikey - I am assuming that the A30 with it's wonderful wind farms are not on your doorstep?
we live with them, SJ - actually, I find the extensive solar farms more intrusive around here and we have plenty of both, 2 miles and a bit away from the A30......
Yes, we have solar farms but they are not so intrusive.
