"satirical comedy series"
Iwan Rheon as Hitler - hmmmm.
I don't think its wrong as such, but I am sure that there are plenty of black actors that could do it just as well as Mr Fiennes.
MJ wasn't really black anymore...for what ever reason.
As Michael Jackson had an almost white complexion a black actor would have looked out of place. IMO
I look forward to seeing Samuel L Jackson play Donny Osmond.
Glenda Jackson has just finished a much-respected stint King Lear !
Perhaps Eddie Murphy could play Elvis.
And if Whoopi Goldberg married Gérard Depardieu she'd be Mrs Whoopi Depardieu.
Jackson wasn't black.

It's strange Danny that so far you are the only one to point out the obvious, yes much better for a white actor to play someone with a white face, much more realistic than a black actress playing Marilyn Monroe, as one once did.

/// Fiennes recounted an incident of discrimination he witnessed many years ago in England when a black actress was picked to play an iconic white woman. ///

/// 'Twenty years ago I worked for the National Theatre as a dresser. I saw a brilliant actress do Marilyn Monroe,' he said. ///

Sorry Gromit, just seen your post.
I said it to.
Has anyone seen Wacko and the Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz in the same room?
Is Joseph Fiennes playing the part with a melted bucket on his head?
Joseph Fiennes is a brilliant actor, he'll be good in the role as far as I'm concerned.
So the upshot of this post is:
It is not wrong for a white actor to play the role of a black star when that actor is portraying a black star who was almost white.

Whew, I'm glad we've sorted that one.
Given that the framework for this is a comedy, I think it is somewhat po-faced of people to try and make an ethnicity issue out of it.

AOG - //It's strange Danny that so far you are the only one to point out the obvious, yes much better for a white actor to play someone with a white face, much more realistic than a black actress playing Marilyn Monroe, as one once did. //

In my view, to straight-jacket people into roles based on their ethnicity and gender is to prevent exploration and invention which is the very lifeblood of art itself.

As advised, Glenda Jackson has just finished a much-lauded run as King Lear, simultaneously underlining that not only is gender irrelevant in an appropriate production, but that a production can be conceived and presented precisely to underline that point.

That is why a black woman can play Marilyn Monroe - it is about character and personification, not slavishly following every single aspect of a character - if that was the rule, then make-up and wig artists would be out of work from tomorrow onwards.
