belladonner, /// love//?
You made this bit up..
//What would be the point of showing little children coming over from Calais? No juicy bits for the outraged right wing middleclases to get their teeth into.//
There are no little children, and it isn’t only the right wing middle classes who are outraged by this farce so think again.

belladonner, I don't 'presume' to be educated. I am educated.
//how do you know there are no small children coming over? //
Because I know how the press and the system works. If there were small children coming over their pictures would have been splashed all over the media. Have you noticed that after the furore yesterday the latest batch of people arriving have their faces covered?

“No one objects to genuine lone vulnerable children being helped,…”
You must speak for yourself, OG. I object to them being helped by the UK when they have passed through a number of other safe countries and have languished in squalor in France for some time. There were plenty of opportunities for them to be helped before now.
“Mr Lineker pays his taxes (far more I suggest that his critics) to a government whose job it really is to do something about world issues.”
But the situation in Calais is not a world issue, Andy; it is a French issue. The French allowed the people there into their country and they did little or nothing to enhance their lot other than to provide a few portakabins.
“If, god forbid, the UK was attacked and we became refugees…”
The UK did come under attack for six years from 1939, bella. Apart from sending some of their children from the large cities to the country the people did not decamp elsewhere. Furthermore, the young men, many of them of the age of those we see arriving from Calais, joined the armed forces to defend their nation. Meanwhile their women endured six years of hardship, raising their families whilst undertaking the work their absent men could not do. They endured these hardships - many of them making the ultimate sacrifice - to ensure their country remained a decent place in which to live. I don’t think too many of them had in mind making it a place to which the world and his wives (and their children) would come to plunder its riches.
There is a simple way to resolve the problem of whether these people are “children” or not – simply allow none of them to settle in the UK unless and until their relatives come forward to claim them and establish their bona fides. Personally I would not even permit that but I accept that some people take the opposite view. The fact that they are allegedly not safe where they are is a matter for the French authorities to resolve.

Whilst I don't really agree much with Gary Lineker (and Lily Allen) on this I don't think it follows that those campaigning for something should be the ones to put their hands in their pockets and pay for it all. It reminds me of all those people who trot out the silly statement that Gromit should put them up in his Tibetan peace shop or something similar.
People who campaign for increased spending on the NHS, for example, are not always those who are in a position to pay for the increase out of just their pockets- they are just saying it's something that should be paid for from taxation. I am not sure how much tax Gary Lineker pays but I expect that even if he has some avoidance advisers he is still paying a lot more tax than most of us, so maybe he has some right to say how he would like it to be spent

Why are so many ABers just not realistic?
My son is 13 an massive, my nephew looks like a geography teacher, the boy next door has to shave 11 times a day, my little Johnny was asked for his pensioner bus pass last week. ....
Year to September 2015 65% of child refugees who had their age disputed were found to be over 18
So why are people being called bigots and racist for saying these 'children' look over 18?

I don't thing saying calmly ' These 'children' look older than 18' deserves being called a racist or bigoted response.
If however a stream of diatribe is spoken or printed then the point is lost and perceptions altered.
I know we don't get too much of that due to the filters but sometimes you can sense the fury - understandable, that's how some people react.

As Mamyalynne has said there won't be many unaccompanied children - it would be very unusual if an 11 year old were to make the journey from Africa to Calais unaccompanied or to be abandoned by parents en-route. The ones we see are older teenagers (maybe older) who can fend for themselves. I'm not saying we should let them in but just saying why they tend to be older

That article features the campaigner Liz Clegg and her work with under 13s. I wonder if the young person pictured with her is one of those under 13s?

Previous reports have said the reason so many of those being brought over were older because most unaccompanied ones were older. If there are younger ones floating around then the admin systems are a shambles because the youngest ones should have been given priority. Maybe though these younger ones don't have known relatives here so don't qualify for refugee status here via that route- they're an issue for France
