No need to ban it.

Ban the idiots trying to get on a plane tanked up, then when on the plane dont serve anyone too many drinks.

It's quite simple.

And for the record, i too need a drink when flying. And when in business or First there is the free bar I like to take advantage of: within reason.
Holiday aircraft ave a 45 minute turnaround time (from landing to taking off again).
How to you breathalyse 200 passengers in a 45 minute window?

If the breathalyser route was taken, it should be a simple matter to single out those who are intoxicated from those who are not - and simply test them.

You write into the terms and conditions on the ticket that every passenger may be asked to take a breath test, and refusal will mean refusal of boarding, and no refund.
Breathalysers wouldn't work. Some people get tipsy on one glass of wine - two and they're solid gone! Other people can drink a bottle with no ill effects.

In YMB's defence (I know ... it's Friday!!)

If his work allows him the perk of business / first class travel, he is unlikely to make a meaningless point by refusing to take it.

I don't see any particular issue with his perceived anti-elitism.

Enjoying superior travel as a perk of your job does not mean you are looking down at people who are less well looked after my their employer.

It demonstrates his principles aren't applied uniformly tho doesn't it?

Oi naomi... Leave me outta this.
If these people were so drunk, how did they get aboard the plane ?

Haven't the airline in question got any procedures in place to stop drunk people from accessing their flights ?

We can't stop the ignorant behaving like yobs, but we can make sure that other people are not inconvenienced.
Are shoe on thesh rite thread, mishey?
*hic*
Apparently Talbot !
Just reading about a few Flights diverted due to Izz heads, a USA price to divert a plane can cost anything from $15000 to $900.000, I can not understand how the cabin Crew with their experience with passengers can not detect a Izz Head when entering the cabin, there should be no hesitation if a plane is diverted due to some drunks they should be charged for the diversion, compensate the passengers ( Some could be terrified of flying) & banned for a 5 year period, more than likely some will disagree but where do we draw the safety line with these people?
TWR what is with the izz head - why not call them drunks?
Alcohol breath - check

Unsteady on feet - check

Slurring speech - check

Volatile attitude - check

Any or any combination of the above - NO BOARDING!

How hard can it be?
That's what I refer to the clowns Islay, each to their own term.
Islay, I ask that self same question albeit in my head every time I see the term.
Bit daft and childish really! if they are clowns call them clowns!!
Whatever, don't let it worry you, that is. that you are not on the plane along with them.
I realise this is totally anetdotal and I do not have stats to prove it, but I met with a couple of people who work as cabin crew last night and mentioned this discussion.
I must admit that I had assumed the trouble was mainly young men on stag dos that were the major trouble makers.
But according to my friends that is not the case. They may get rowdy, but fights are rare. They identified 3 troublesome groups in order:

1. Husbands and wives. Or families.
2. First class, complementary drinks. Some people really go for it.
3. Groups of women/Hen parties

They said they do spot people wobbly on their feet, but they tend to quickly fall asleep. Most of the culprits have had a drink, but are not very drunk.
Very drunk people rarely kick off or are incapable of doing so.

There's a point of drunkeness where people suddenly become really easily offended...

In the pub people get offended because they think the bar staff are ignoring them...or when someone puts their money down for a game of pool and they're secretly trying to say they aren't welcome to play pool anymore...

Or football...drunk people fight about football.
