One theory is it gives us a stronger hand at trying to negotiate terms.
Negotiations will only start when Article 50 is triggered, and that is not going to happen any time soon
It does not make sense to start talks unless you are 100% sure of what you want and have plans A,B & C at least.

I also want it wrapped up quickly but I also dont want it rushed and messed up.

In addition it gives us chance to start talks Globally and so put us in a much better bargaining position

Indeed. Take your time......but hurry up about it!
I think the official line that talks are not starting this year should not be taken to imply that nothing at all is happening behind the scenes.

I would suggest the contrary is true - and that battalions of negotiators are being selected and trained ready for the discussions to take place - and this time frame will be used to the government's advantage.
There were reports going around prior to the referendum suggesting it may take up to five years before we were out...
Could the reason be, no one believed brexit would win so no preparations have been made?
surely not, anneasquith!

I would put money on it that obituaries for every single public figure and celebrity of note are already in the files, waiting for the appropriate day. I have evidence to back that up from a casual conversation with a journalist colleague who confirmed he had filed an obituary with a national newspaper of a musician who is not even unwell, much less dead!

If newspapers prepare for something as relatively unimportant as that - how much more prepared would any politicians be for the outcome of the greatest change to our system of trade in living memory!
Of course obituaries are written in advance in many cases! And in fact some contingency was made for a leave vote.
There'll be no pre article 50 negotiations though I can guarantee that
It might have been an idea for the Eurosceptics, who have been campaigning for out for four decades, if they had actually done some work towards how it could be accomplished. As it is, they want to blunder from one step to the other, without really knowing what they are doing. And that is Reckless.
Until the nuts and bolts of how to do Brexit with the best possible outcome for the UK is worked out, then May is right in not doing anything hasty.
They need time to work out a cunning plan on how to stop it happening.

We'll leave when the conditions are right...they're not quite right...still not quite right....still not quite right....still not quite right...and so on and so forth until everyone's hopefully forgotten we were supposed to be leaving.
it has been suggested on here in the past, Gromit, that we just stop the direct debit and start trading with the rest of the world - and Europe will carry on trading with us anyway without tariffs as they are so desperate for us to buy their BMWs etc. Maybe it is as straightforward as that?

Our membership is legally binding, and are subject ti fines for late and non payments.
It they Government genuinely want out they can fast track leaving.
But they don't, and won't.
The very fact that the French Pres wants it done quickly would delay it for me.
"Our membership is legally binding, and are subject ti fines for late and non payments. "

oh really, on the basis that the original premise to get us in was all based on lies and deceit...

whos going to fine us and whos going to enforce and collect the fines ?....
