What a fantastic article - thanks Gromit!
The Manchester London Road / Piccadilly pictures brought back memories.....and that 1961 architect's drawings coincided with mega grandiose plans to transform the city, with double-decker freeways down Portland Street, and even helipads.....
Only the 'Piccadilly Plaza' element came to fruition.
Another hidden gem of the 20th century in Manchester is Oxford Road Station:

Fab architecture but due to the terrible running of local trains it's probably the worst station in Britain to use at rush hour.
Thanks Gromit...most enjoyable ! We should have saved Euston Arch you know ...terrible error to knock it down.
Brilliant pics Gromit! The sheer hard labour involved in the construction of these buildings.
Loved the comment at the end of second link! ;0)
I find those old drawings & plans lovely to look at.
I'll save those two links Gromit for of line reading, I'll show some people in work, thanks!

Mikey,

Did ypu know the stones from the Euston arch were just dumped into the Thames are are apparently in good condition in the mud, and recoverable. There is a campaign to rebuild it.

Beautiful photos. What a crime to demolish the Great Hall at Euston. Stunning building.
I love Grand Central Station in New York. I could sit there for hours staring at the ceiling, after eating oysters in the wonderful bar there.
My local railway station (Widnes) is slightly famous because Art Garfunkel wrote 'Homeward Bound' whilst sat there one evening waiting to travel to his next gig. There's a plaque up !

Oh, I always thought it was Garfunkel who wrote it - shows how much notice I take !

Great article and photos, our station was quite an edifice too - you felt really important back in the sixties entering with your case to go on holiday.

Now it looks like a kiosk selling newspapers above ground and not a glimpse of a station till you descend.

Nothing 'Brief Encounter' about it anymore.
Lovely pictures. I grew up not far from Euston and Kings Cross. Doesn't Euston look grand?
