Yes, and it got widely covered here just not on BBC.
I don't know but given how popular Wimbledon is I think it deserves the coverage. I look forward to it every year and it's only two weeks.

I was watching some at Roland Garros and was surprised to see so many empty seats there.
No, they don't: Wimbledon is the one! For example, in August we are having the Canadian Open (Rogers Cup). Apparently ,78 of the top 80 players will be here in Toronto. I don't think it gets much attention...Especially from me:)
Partly it's because a lot of other tennis only gets coverage on Sky or ESPN or other channels that aren't freeview. The lack of coverage was to such an extent that for a long time as a child I didn't even realise there were other tournaments than Queen's, Wimbledon and the French Open...
I get a lot more enjoyment watching paint dry.
Tennis is a sport for people who don't like sport......
That's 'cos you ain't got no class, ron. :-)

Nothing better than sipping one's Pimms and scoffing strawberry (can only afford the one at Wimbledon prices) and cream whilst watching the "gallant" Brits make their customary exits on days one and two. !!
By contrast to WR and melv, tennis is about the only sport I like, and I watch it whenever I can.
You can add golf to my list as well, jim. All you are watching is badly dressed people walk around the countryside with a stick in their hand! :-)
Golf I don't enjoy much either.
New Judge, you got it: Pimms, strawberries, perhaps a Panama and a cravat, and the occasional fleeting glimpse of white (they'd better be!) knickers:)
This is list of tournaments being broadcast in the UK for this year from May onwards:-

Other countries are covering their own events and the broadcasting companies simply buy the rights to show them over here.
Yes, golf for spectators - 95% of the time spent watching two blokes trudge across a field with a Sherpa carrying their belongings
I remember watching Roland Garrod on terrestrial French TV years ago and it was pretty comprehensive except the doubles didn't count for as much
Most other countries show the slams on dedicated sports channels
The BBC has lost the Olympics and had to team up with ITV for the Six Nations
Plus it's under a sustained attack from the current government which seems to have taken it upon itself to slash its budget with no consultation from the viewers so I suspect Wimbledon will end up going the same way.
Think Djokovic might have just said it all, the biggest tournament in the sport!
