Not upsetting the muslim community is more important than a few thousand young girls being raped and abused..

Maybe needs a Celebrity or two on the suspect list?
Is it a fear of upsetting the Muslim community or another sort of prejudice that allowed this abuse to continue unchecked. I'd guess that a lot of senior police think the victims were the dregs of society, young drug addicts, from broken homes, or in care, and so beyond the care and protection they should have had.
I would suggest that sandy's perspective has far more validity than dave50's.
A friend of mine was a police constable in the Sheffield police and I was discussing the problem of children in care, especially girls. He said that they can be a complete pain. A lot of them abscond from the foster carers & children's homes. The police bring them back to the homes, only for them to do it again & again. Thousands of hours of police time are wasted catching the children, bringing them back, then repeating the operation.
I can understand the police's attitude to the problem, but I don't in any way condone it.

Why must it be either/or? The system may be at fault in some respects but nothing should detract from the fact that the perpetrators are guilty of horrendously abusing of these girls.

Adult prostitution can also be a problem for the Police, should they also ignore them if they reported that they had been raped?
Having been brought up in the care system I can tell you there are many reasons that us 'inmates' absconded. Maybe if someone looked into why we were doing it and actually listened when we tried to tell them of the abuses we were suffering in the homes it would have lessened the 'burden' on the police.
I ran away so many times I lost count, the police were not always called, when they were they didn't always bother looking for me. I was missing for 2 whole weeks once and the home and police couldn't have cared less.
The point I was making was that it wasn't a fear of upsetting Muslim sensibilities that stayed the hand of the police but rather an indifference to the plight of the victims.
These children have suffered a double whammy, first at the hands of the perpetrators of their abuse and then again by being neglected by those who had a duty to protect them.
AOG. I believe adult prostitution is tolerated in most communities, as is child grooming. I,m not saying it's right, I'm saying it's a fact of human nature that's been with us for centuries. Btw, most of the street prostitutes come from the care system, when that is sorted we might get rid of some problems in our society.

You've touched on something that very few people want to acknowledge.

In fact, I think you've hit the nail on the head.

I'm going to get an enormous amount of flak for this, but it needs tone said...

A couple of mates of mine are coppers, and have told me that the reason the Rochdale groomers got away with it for so long is because the victims were 'the wrong kind of girl'.

These were indeed vulnerable teenagers but we're talking about girls who were already known to the police because they'd been excluded from school and/or had criminal convictions for theft, drugs and a whole host of other minor crimes.

Had the gangs targeted 'nice' middle class girls, it's likely (according to my mate) that the gangs would not have gotten away with it for so long.

He gave the analogy that a murdered mum walking through a park at 3pm will get much more media traction than a murdered prostitute walking the streets late at night.

That is not to say that the victim is in any way to blame - just an explanation as to why some cases are more 'media-friendly' than others.
You deserve flak for it,sp. You hang on to that belief if it makes happy.
steve wright murdered several "wrong sort of girl" in ipswich.

is he therefore less culpable?

I'm explaining a theory as to why these cases got less attention than Yew Tree. It's a perfectly valid theory from someone (a copper) who knows about the disjunct between social services, schools and the police.

Furthermore, this is only one theory.

Another point though - Jimmy Saville and Cyril Smith got away with raping kids too. There are parallels to these cases. The Sheffield and Rotherham cases went on for years, whereas the Saville and Smith cases went on for half a century!

We need to ask ourselves how as a society we can protect these kids from these people...

I suspect that if these girls had been Asian girls and the groomers were white, these type of gangs would have been cleared from our cities long ago.

I am 'hanging on to it' with him, because I think it is a valid point.
AOG - // I suspect that if these girls had been Asian girls and the groomers were white, these type of gangs would have been cleared from our cities long ago. //

I think that scenario fits in with your default position that Asians would be treated faster and with greater diligence by virtue of their ethnicity.

I also think you are entirely wrong in that premise.
I'm with SP too.

Can't see this ever happening with Asian girls AOG as their freedom is so much more limited than these poor girls seems to be.
C'mon...if you're disagreeing with SP you're doing for the sake of it. It's a fact...the better the family, the better the treatment.
