What is going on ? All the avatars apart from Jagjag has disappeared !

I have noticed this frequently. Instead of an avatar or jelly men one often sees just a blank square containing what I can only describe as a tiny sheet of blue paper with one corner folded over.

This is not restricted to AB. I have noticed this on the BBC website where pictures are replaced with the symbol I have described above.
