Why after 51 years of screening 'Doctor Who' was there any need to include a Lesbian scene in the first place?

/// The decision to remove the first lesbian encounter in the show’s 51-year history has angered gay rights campaigners, who accused executives of giving into homophobia. ///

It' all a bit of a non event ( at least until the BBC decided to remove the scene) and tbh if it was a 'lesbian kiss' it was the least erotic thing I've ever seen. It was an air exchange between two lesbian characters, not quite the same thing, nothing erotic or sexual about it at all. Should it have been removed because someone's sensibiities got upset? No because...

/// If you have not watched the show, and are ignorant of it's content, it would make so much sense to view it on BBC iPlayer to educate yourself
first. ///

I can't see how watching such rubbish would be 'educating' myself

/// As you have made a mistake (the same one that Peter Tatchell and the Daily Mail have), I would suggest you watch the episode - otherwise you risk making yourself look foolish. ///

Why do you shy away from criticising the BBC, because isn't it the BBC who started all this by cutting the scene from their Asian audiences in the first place, because it might be labelled 'a Lesbian' kiss?

So in this case sir, it is you and not I who has made yourself look foolish.

If they hadn't made that connection themselves and then to ban it from certain audiences, there wouldn't have been a story for the Daily Mail to print and consequently I and Peter Thatchet, and all those on AB, would have not been provided with a story to comment on.

Its almost unbelievable that this childrens TV program should have resulted in such a long, drawn out debate, and I am aware that I am part of it. Lets not forget...this is fiction, and not very well written fiction at that.

If people want to indulge in some quality SFI, try the Asimov Foundation books. I can't recommend them highly enough.
ANOTHEOLDGIT if they had not removed the scene, would you have been as upset as you are now?

Yes amazing over 100 posts, one can certainly tweek the sensitive buttons of fellow ABers, one has to just pick the right subject matter.
I did a double take as I thought

Hey AOG is coming out of the closet and is distressed over the censorship.

but No its Monday and the same old AOG
I'm an Iain (M) Banks sort of guy, myself, Mikey.

One certainly gets some intelligent questions on here,

If the BBC had not removed the scene, there would have been no Daily Mail story, and therefore we would not have been made aware of it.

Also who said I am upset, it would appear that from this there are many others who are the ones that are more upset over this, than I could ever be.

Regardless of the day, I notice that you never change.
If anyone is sensitive it is you ANOTHEOLDGIT. You referred to the BBC removing the scene so that it didn't offend middle-class elderly Asian men but it offended you, an elderly European and you have yet to see it!
wow 108 replies to a thread about a 'childrens' TV programme lol!If I can just interject among the feather ruffling and pontification and remind the good people that if K9 been a female doggy and had needed to give an 'oxygen transfer' to one of Dr. Whos' lovely female assistants, I think anyone's sanity would have been questions if they described that as a lesbian kiss.
I have lived in North America and watched UK produced programs that have been hacked to death because of the countries policies on swearing or other content deemed 'unsuitable'. Try watching Gordon Ramsey in North America -it sounds like tubular bells. Some States in America, eg in the bible belt, will not show certain scenes -this does not 'outrage' anyone nor cause concern about homophobia . Dr. Who was 'doctored' to enable it to be sold and broadcast to an Asian audience. No this does not outrage me there are much more serious things in the world to be outraged about .

No because that portrays it a a. being something it's not and b. Even if it was that, that there is somehow something wrong in it. Removing it sends out entirely the wrong message.
You asked "[Why] was there any need to include a Lesbian scene in the first place?" If you had no problem with the scene, why did you ask the question?

You asked:

"Why after 51 years of screening 'Doctor Who' was there any need to include a Lesbian scene in the first place?"

If you haven't seen the scene, and are basing your impression of the scene on the Daily Mail report, would it not make sense to look at it yourself before determining whether it was or was not a 'lesbian scene'?

Really AOg have a look at the scene yourself. I'm sure you'll agree it's not really a Lesbian kiss. If it is it's quite put me off the idea of being bi-sexual ;)
AOG

You wrote:

With all due respect, it really, really isn't me who has been made to look foolish. If I make a mistake on AB, and refer to a story incorrectly, I am happy to admit my mistake and move on.

I've always found that the best way to debate. Much better to do that, than to stick to my guns...even when I have run out of bullets.
it is well known that the BBC make their programmes with a view to marketing them in other galaxies, and awareness of lizard peoples' sensitivities is included in their procedural maual.
kvalidir, while I agree with your sentiments, I doubt the BBC removed the scene because they thought it may have offended certain people. They removed it to comply with the Laws of that particular country in order to sell it to that country.. Whether we agree with those laws is a separate issue. The BBC often dub over swear words and cut scenes to comply with Countriess broadcasting Laws.

Who ever said I was 'offended' neither did I refer to the BBC removing the scene so that it didn't offend middle-class Asian men.

Here is the post that may have confused you into thinking that, read it again.

/// So are you more outraged at a lesbian kiss or a inter species kiss I wish you would make it clear in you initial op!! ///

Don't be so dramatic who said I was 'OUTRAGED'?

/// I don't think it has to do with offending 'Asians' at all I think that excuse is being used as a scapegoat!!! Remember when torch wood showed a gay kiss, OMG there was an outcry by white middle classed older men!! ///

Read the report,

*** The BBC cut a controversial lesbian kiss scene from Doctor Who to avoid offending audiences when it was screened in Asia. ***

Was this scene cut when it was screened in Asia, so that it didn't offend middle-class elderly Asian men?

......................................................................................................

You see this was in reply to the "outcry by white middle classed older men!!" remark.

You are not offended by the scene then?
