Every year we are told of these alarming figures of population growth in the UK, when are our politicians going to address the problems that such a unsustainable rise in population is creating?

This phenomenon has not only been highlighted in the organs of "bile and spleen". That well know right-wing organisation the BBC also carried an article on it. It is certainly not a non-issue. Couldn't we just discourage everyone from having children? Perhaps every newborn could be entered into a giant lottery, and the number drawn at the end of the year gets put through a woodchipper or used as a football in the world cup or gets fired out of a giant cannon into the sun or something.
because it is not a problem, whereas the rat population is. That fetaured on Spotlight down here yesterday, Newton Abbot being deemed the regional capital for 'super rat.'

My opinion is that you are out to stir the pot on a non-issue yet again, based on something that the Express has no doubt 'cooked' up in its bile and spleen organ today. Today the Express, tomorrow the Mail. Yawn.
Didn't know that Singapore is bigger than the UK in terms of land mass. Have they annexed part of Malaysia or Indonesia? I must renew my subscription to the Far Eastern Economic News.

/// because it is not a problem, whereas the rat population is. ///

Not a problem eh yet the rat population is?????

How many houses do we need to build to accommodate the rats?

How many schools do we need to build to educate the rats?

How many beds in hospitals do we need to treat all the rat population?

That is not taking all the other infrastructure into consideration.

Well if you cared to read where the figures came from you would see that they have not been 'cooked up' by the Express or even the Mail, they are official Office for National Statistics figures.

That may be your answer, but it certainly isn't mine.

Interesting but very scary to read the 'Left's' answers on this problem, suggesting culls, sterilisation and the problem less important than the rat population.

These are the one's who created the problem in the first place, no not the rats but the Labour party.

Now, now don't read into that what I didn't mean to convey.

/// All of these have been in a bad state for at least the last 2 of not 3 decades and that cannot be blamed on immigration. ///

That may well be, but yes you can blame immigration for adding vastly to the problem.

/// What are you suggesting we do with immigrants - rather than hint and pussy foot about - why not just tell us! ///

Who's 'pussy footing' about, how many more times? I and other reasonably educated persons have said it over and over again, "Curb Immigration."
This phenomenon has not only been highlighted in the organs of "bile and spleen". That well know right-wing organisation the BBC also carried an article on it. It is certainly not a non-issue. It is a serious matter which needs to be addressed.

The comparison with the country's rate of population growth in earlier times is not really appropriate, Gromit. It does not matter too much if you put 20% more water into a bath only half full. It does matter if you add the same percentage to one which is 95% full.

I cannot believe that you could be so glib, DT, to suggest that the current population level and projected growth is less of a problem than the prevalence of rats. There are parts of the country where people are crammed into severely overcrowded conditions ("beds in sheds"), where people are being bumped off their GP's lists to make way for others, where parents are being denied access not only to their first choice of school for their children, but very often to their second, third and fourth resulting in many of them having siblings in different schools with all the problems that brings. There are 4,000 children due to start school in September yet to be allocated a primary school place. The problems caused by population levels in parts of the country are enormous. And it's no use suggesting that people spread themselves out from the cities and larger towns - there's nowhere for them to spread out to.

The notion that the country can only survive with an ever-increasing population needs to be challenged and a model devised to sustain the UK on at the very least a level population but preferably one with a managed decline in numbers. After all, rats can be poisoned, gassed or otherwise disposed of. Nobody here is suggesting a similar strategy for humans. Leaving aside minor entities such as Monaco and the Vatican, England is the second most densly populated major area in Europe, behind only Malta (which has a population smaller than Bristol). The population growth must be addressed as it is unsustainable.
And it's important to note that it is not just immigration which is driving population growth.
64 million very much is a problem. We already do not have enough resources for folk, houses where built are smaller all the time, as are the gardens. GP and dental surgeries difficult to get onto, we are performing urban sprawl at the behest of the government and "wanting" to build all over our valued green areas, etc. etc. etc.. And it is only going to get worse as the population is allowed to continue to grow. It's when we start to decrease we can think about whether we can breath a sigh of relief or whether it is still too soon to unstress.
The problem of over-population will never be adequately addressed by politicians, because they fear the backlash if they are seen to suggest that every individual human does not have the right to breed as often as they wish. Suggesting such a thing would be political suicide. And before anyone challenges me on this, I dont know what the answer is, either. The problem, though, is plain for all to see - there are just too many humans on the planet!
