What I am still puzzled by is why he was given 13 x life sentences, and at the same time the Judge said that he should only serve at least 8 years ?
That might or might not be appropriate for someone who was given 1 life sentence, but what was the point of giving him another 12, if he can get out after just 8 years ? The public might be forgiven for thinking that when some one is awarded 13 life sentences, that person would never get out, ever.
In addition, he had a history of absconding from prison before the 13 life sentences were awarded, which makes the 8 year bit even more difficult to understand, and his incarceration in an open prison, impossible to understand.
How many more people are there in Britain that are in the same boat ? Is it any wonder that most ex-cons go on to commit more crimes ? We might as well put revolving doors on our prisons and have done with it !
