Why must the UK always get involved, surely this is more of a concern to closer European countries than Britain?

Indeed Zacs. I fear we're on a sticky wicket.
A lot depends on the level of importance a UK government minister and the UK electorate attach to themselves. If Iraq and Afghanistan, why not Ukraine ?

Eh?

Would you rather we did nothing then, AoG? We are part of the G8, the G20, NATO the UN and the EU. We have strategic and economic reasons for wishing to ensure stability in the zone, and as a member of the international community we should have an opinion on external incursions into sovereign countries.

Added to that, we are the 7th largest global economy, and have the 5th/6th most powerful military muscle. Of course we should have an opinion, and should get involved in diplomatic initiatives.
...added to which there is the prospect of the largest country in Europe invading the second largest (already happened in fact).

"Most of them have been made redundant, thanks to the present Government"

Slight exaggeration :) Even taking the latest cuts into account, we still have the 5th/6th largest professional standing army. It is inevitable we will have an opinion on this issue.

Bouncer, go back to skool and do some maths, then talk about facts.

Visiting is fine AOG, so long as that is all we do.
because he is Foreign Secretary i would have thought.

I only ask because are we not a member of the EU, and since they generally tell us what we can or cannot do, I would have thought that they (the EU parliament) would have a say in all this, and it is not for Mr Hague to pack a bag, jump on a plane and go shooting off to the Ukraine?
I bet Putin is shaking in his boots knowing that Oor Willie is going to the Ukraine !
Apparently its Oor Wullie.
as Foreign Secretary, just as in any other countries foreign representative, surely it's his role, to help, aid, guide, listen and evaluate the current situation. So he can report on it back home
