Nazi Sympathisers
The papers today carry a story of a 'genius' spycatcher who infiltrated nazi sympathisers during the war. The story is interesting, as is its conclusion.
The sympathisers came from the aristocrisy and the establishment. And none of the traitors were ever prosecuted for helping the enemy, they remained free.
// He gathered information on the aristocracy, the military and the intellectual elite, with one sympathiser claiming to have influence over Herbert Morrison, the home secretary at the time.
He also shed light on the fascist plans of Sir Oswald Mosley and “Hitler worshippers” such as George Pitt-Rivers, Churchill’s cousin.
MI5 was unable to prosecute those involved for fear it would be accused of entrapment, and it was decided that telling the sympathisers they had been duped would push them further underground. //

Do you think they escaped jjustice because of their connections?

/// good job we had decent union men like my uncle who would speak out against these fascists ///
Ah yes, those decent union men?
*** Meanwhile the communists in Cable Street had overturned a lorry; timber was expropriated from a builder's yard, along with bricks with which to pelt the police. Broken glass was strewn across the road to hamper and injure the police horses and the battle between the police and communists lasted for some hours, overall there were dozens of injured police
and 70 arrests. ***
*** There is abundant evidence that the BUF has been steadily gaining ground in many parts of East London and it has strong support in such districts as Stepney, Shoreditch, Bethnal Green, Hackney and Bow. ***
*** There can he no doubt that the unruly element in the crowd was very largely Communist-inspired. A number of well-known active communists were seen at, or near, points where actual disorder occurred. While attempts by the Communist Party to raise enthusiasm over the 'Fascist defeat' were comparative failures the BUF, during the week following the banning of their march, conducted the most successful series of meetings since the beginning of the movement. ***
*** In Stepney, Shoreditch, Bethnal Green, Stoke Newington and Limehouse, crowds estimated at several thousands of people (the highest being 12,000) assembled and accorded the speakers an enthusiastic reception; opposition was either non-existent or negligible and no disorder took place". ***

Your own link suggests it was public opinion which went against the British Union of Fascists. Before that, it was Daily Mail support which led to its rise. Rothemere's decision was commercially motivated. Many companies withdrew advertising because it was supporting anti-Semitism. When the Daily Mail stop supporting it, it declined.
// a public outcry ensued and Lord Rothermere and his Daily Mail newspaper withdrew its support and over the next few months membership of the BUF went into decline. //

Good Lord.
Thanks for the link Gromit.
"As stated above, the Jews have deliberately maintained themselves as a foreign community in Britain, setting their racial interests above the national interest. As such, therefore, they will be treated, and none can complain of treatment which accords with their own actions. We do not permit foreigners to be M.P.'s or officials, or afforded the full rights of British citizenship, and Jews will not be afforded these privileges. Anyone in the service of the State under Fascism must be entirely British."
Why on Earth did the BUF have such a problem with the Jews?
Does anyone know?

/// Two years later Mosley joined the Independent Labour Party and in 1926 he was elected to represent Smethwick in the General Election, and in the following year he was elected to the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party. ///

I think you will find that there were many who supported the new party that he formed, it was later that the BUF quickly developed the appearance of a major political party, with a membership of 40,000, but by 1934 its progress was hindered by the withdrawal of respectable support such as the Rothermere press,

But do you know why they had such an issue with Jewish people?
Were there any other groups they had an issue with, or was it just the Jews?
You see, the point I was making about 'times change, but things remain the same' is that we have a couple of far right groups, who use exactly the same rhetoric, but rather than Jews, it's Muslims.

sp1814, very briefly, Jews were seen as a scapegoat for the country's ills (and Germany's), as other foreigners are now. Historically they were money-lenders (because Christians were forbidden to do this), and nobody likes money-lenders. It was assumed that they were like bankers now, rolling in money squeezed out of the indigenous poor. It was also assumed they were unpatriotic, only loyal to themselves and other Jews - "rootless sosmopolitans".
All guff, but scapegoats are always useful in troubled times.
