immigration is a problem, those who say it isn't are deluding themselves, and the government said it could control immigration, it can't, thanks to the EU and leaky borders. Those that get in illegally will disappear into a big city, those that get in legally via visas like students can and do overstay the visa and their welcome. I really don't care what the DM...

This thread is about the UK as a whole. Not just London. The question is about whether the UK is overcrowded - i.e. whether the Mail's figures are right. Answering this question by saying 'well, it is in London' is a bit like someone trying to find out how cold the weather on earth is, and then finding out by asking someone on the south pole.

It shows how short of real news they are if this is being presented as something new. Britain has been the most densely settled European country since the mid-1800s, due to industrialisation. I agree that a succession of craven ruling parties have not acted positively and consistently on curbing unskilled immigration, and I really worry that this is paving the way for an extreme right-wing backlash.

I ought to cast no aspertions about the ethnicity of the middle class couples "with 350 grand to spend", so often featured but suffice to say that (I imagine) only a tiny minority of other ethnic groups want to voluntarily move to be further away from their friends and family, in the big smoke, only to find themselves in the middle of 'white flight' land.
By way of contrast, Homes Under the Hammer is far more cosmopolitan in terms of the backround of the auction winners.

Naomi...I didn't write the article...the DM did, and they did it for the reasons I gave.
The article wasn't a piece of investigative journalism or an example of campaigning journalism, in the manner of their previous excellent and widely praised work on the Stephen Lawrence case. It was just designed to stir up trouble and ensure that UKIP or the Tories win the next election, not Labour. And it was sloppy and irresponsible writing, as others have point out here this morning.
The DM is a rabidly right-wing newspaper and its raison d'etre is to make sure that Britain is not ruled by the left of centre, in any way it can.
I don't have a problem with newspapers being partisan but distrust those that hide their real intentions under the guise of serious journalism.
There may be a few areas that are experiencing problems with an influx of foreigners, but the vast majority of the UK doesn't see a foreigner from one day to the next. Go to Mid Wales or The West Country and its like stepping back into the 1950's. But no matter where you live, if the Daily Mail was your only source of newsprint, you could be forgiven for thinking that we are over-run with Johnny Foreigners, which just isn't the case. Nor are we as a nation "crowded" Parts of the South East and London maybe but not the rest of the UK.
For the first 21 days of December I was on hols in Cornwall, and never saw anyone that could be remotely described as foreign, although Devonians are thought a bit dodgy down there. I am now in West Somerset and it will be the same here. Racism and xenophobia views are not going to go away if we pretend that they don't exist. But you will never hear that from the likes of the DM however.

Labour never had an open door immigration policy, they had to abide to EU rules signed for by the previous Tory Government.
And the rules have not changed, so the immigrants are still coming here in their hundreds of thousands.

Why do we not blame the papers - at least partly? it does appear here that the DM has very selectively used and reported the numbers, and what outcome do they want/expect other than increased xenophobia as a result of doing this?
I agree that we cannot and should not blame the press when they are reporting objectively and factually, but that is not the case here.

It is so easy to blame the Daily Mail when they report on matters that some would wish not to be reported on, no matter who the messenger is.
