The Conservatives promised to reduce immigration to just tens of thousands. But they haven't achieved that, and the latest figures show the numbers coming here are rising again.

// But the latest figures showed that 182,000 more people came to Britain than left in the year to June, up from 167,000 in the year before. //

Is it time Cameron admitted this was a never achievable and was just a con?

Do you mean is he going to admit to being a fibber?
It is perfectly achievable but one must regain control of one's own borders first.
Agree with OG, and if that means coming out of the EU so be it - time for David to tell the EU what we the public want for our country, and take the consequences ( if any as I believe they need us more than we need them)
You know very well it is achievable, the problems are though:

a) The right-on brigade in the jusdiciary
b) Membership of the EU
C) The ECHR
d) Failure to lock down our borders to Non EU illegals.
e) Failure to boot out anyone who is illegal or incarcerate them.

Whilst he is shackled by liberals I dont suppose any of the above can be addressed.

It's a shame really as the country does need immigration, but uncontrolled immigration is leading to unrest and the notion that immigration is bad.
iogtied by EU rules, we don't own our border anymore, that is the prerogative of the unelected men and women in suits elsewhere.
hogtied, sorry abut the typo
Ymb's last paragraph sums it up wonderfully.
all too little and way too late. We may need immigration, but heavens sake did it have to be so many and from such dirt poor places, and more coming by the looks of it,
I don't understand why it can't be achieved, why not? Is it because we might get fined by the EU? so what if we do? Just refuse to pay. Who are they going to lock up as punishment?
i dont think it was a con, just i think it was unachievable, hands tied and all that

Membership of the EU means anyone from Europe is entitled to come here. We could come out of the EU but then all our jobs would go to mainland Europe.
and you know that how? seeing as it hasn't happened, where is the outright evidence of that...
going on the news report last evening Romanians are gearing up to flee their country for not just UK but other places in Europe, which obviously doesn;t please the politicians in Romania, because they are losing the educated as well as the duffers. so that means those who go overseas take their experience, expertise with them, and those who leave are doing so because of the money, one chap said the most he can earn is around 300 euros a month, whilst here it will be ten times that...
Scaremongering.
It's the buggers that swim across that cannot be controlled.
OG, no it;s not, the Labour party reckoned around 13,000 thousand or so would land here from Poland, ha ha, look at the figures how many did, and how many live here still.
It is. Potential job opportunities would still come to the UK.
if we left the EU, i agree on that.
If only labour hadn't opened the flood gates we might have had some control. We knew no government would stem immigration once the tide encroached, doesn't matter what hue is in force, it's not going to happen afaic.
no it won't, unless we ditch the EU and take control back of our borders, and employ decent security to actually police them properly, and not ineffectual money making outfits like G4 or whatever they are called. They had to call in the army to guard the Olympics once the idiots who were originally employed failed in their efforts, underestimate of the numbers needed so in came the reinforcements, bet the army loved that one.....
