In the poll 67% want drastic action.
This is rather worrying. We all know immigration is necessary, but because of a terrible New labour experiment, lax rules, ECHR rulings and a useless border agency we are now in this situation.
If this poll is right is not just the Tories problem even if the left crow over Farage being the thorn in Camerons side, it would appear he may well appeal to others too.
This could lead to far right extremism and the sort of thing Mickey has posed just below which no right minded person wants, so will out leaders do something about it rather than just trying to score points over each other? This has now gone well beyond silly party squabbling.
We need a sensible policy which we can take the cream of those who want to come to help build our country and also allows us to help those in genuine need that is not interfered with by the likes of Europe, both the ECHR and the EU.

AOG, you have a habit of begging a question (forgive me if it's not so) and here you presume that some on here seem to welcome a 'huge' number of immigrants. From where does this presumption of 'huge' come ? Are we expected to reply on the basis that we accept 'huge' as fact and then answer, having tacitly agreed it ?
But the answer to all the questions you posited in the post is that immigration works if the resident population is not the poorer for it. We might put "if they don't perceive themselves as worse off, though, in fact, they are better off" but that descending into politicians' thinking, not logic or economics.

Wasn't there another report issued today which shows that there is precious little evidence that immigrants are coming to the UK to claim benefits in any significant numbers?

Of course there may be, and are, other issues - espeically to do with resources on the ground and the black economy (where there is no revenue to the Exchequer), but it seems to me that all this report shows is that the British public have a percperion which is not entirely in tune with reality.
It was also disappointing to here the Tory MP for Peterborough dismissing the report in quite well, rude terms, and putting his faith in "public perception". Public perception is all very well, and is not to be discounted entirely, but you do wonder when an allegedly responsible politican chooses to rubbish established fact completely, in favour of it.

Some of you lefties still don't get it. Even the Labour Party have apologised for their mistaken immigration policies.
Its nothing to do with racism or bigotry. Its about cheap labour suppressing already low wages. Personally I think we have enough billionaires and foodbanks in this country as it is. Only big business and, apparently, the left wing of ABland could welcome continued mass immigration.

Well they would say that wouldn't they, this was a European Commission study, reported on by the BBC, you couldn't get more bias than that, could you?

They say it because it's a fact.
I freely admit that it isn't the whole story but my question is why do so many focus only on the negative. People are now complaining about "benefit tourism" etc. as an accepted fact and this seems now to have entered the political mainstream as though it was a critical issue which actual evidence would suggest it is not

That's why the Labour party introduced the minimum wage - something the Tory party would love to abolish.
The minimum wage gives the lie to this line of argument
Whilst in some areas this is a matter of enforcement particularly with gang masters exploiting people who don't speak the language here the solution is to enforce the existing Gang-master legislation to ensure migrants get paid what they are entitled to be paid.

Can the European Union equally deny that this does not take place?
No but we can just by noting our crowded NHS, schools, and housing etc.
The EU are obviously bias when it comes to them defending their own directive.

The examples quoted don't contradict that. I don't see why a foreign person should not claim job seekers allowance (hardly a fortune) if they are seeking work. If the benefits system is drawing people here that is surely a good thing if it attracts people coming to work. If it was me ot os something that would encourage me in an uncertain economic climate. By all means if there are people coming to the UK then that is wrong, but are for example a significant number of eg Poles coming to the UK simply to claim JSA? Common sense would suggest not
