The trouble is that many of the jobs, agricultural work for example, aren't in the places where the unemployed are.
Should the Government stop old people from working when there are a million unemployed youngsters?
// Almost a million people in Britain are now working past the age of 65 according to official figures showing record numbers shunning the prospect of retirement. //

Sandy, I did a 100mile round trip for 15years going to work in the city -
our younguns favor uni to apprenticships that leave them over qualified for mundane jobs & in debt.

Euro kids take the apprentice path & have a useful trade when they arrive here.
A lot of our youngsters don't want the jobs which the immigrant workforce is taking - there is mileage in looking at the system described on the TV last week, 1949 welfare state, where if you didn't attempt to get work, you lost your benefits.
Employers should be able to employ who they want to end of. And I'm unemployed.
Yes tambo. They were conned into doing so by the previous government who announced a target to get 50% of youngsters into university. Of course if the youngsters sufficiently bright to go to uni had done some basic research before falling for this ridiculous strategy they would have established that only about 15% (at absolute tops) of jobs in the UK require a university education so around 35% of them at least would be wasting their time and money.

Should the government ban immigrants from taking jobs?

(a) They cannot legally do so.
(b) What difference does it make whether we pay unemployed foreigners or unemployed UK citizens to live here?

The question should really be "Should the government ban immigrants from ENTERING THE COUNTRY while a million British youngsters are unemployed?"

And that question should have been asked - and satisfactorily addressed - at least fifteen years ago.
employers should employ who they like, yes, but they should also pay the correct amount for the job, not below min wage, and thinking about it, do away with zero hours contracts. imo.
Baza couldn't agree more
And do away with "Working Tax Credits" which allow employers to pay below subsistence level wages and/or allow workers to work less than a full week, with the difference being made up by the taxpayer.
Quite right too. Our workers should be picking the cabbages, asparagus, carrots, and other produce, and packing these. All three of the plumbers in my village should be British; none should be Latvian.
have the Great British public also voted overwhelmingly to pay the higher prices that would result from having higher-paid Great British workers?
May not make any difference , jno. We are already paying British workers to stay at home, allegedly allowing them to earn more and be more comfortable than if they were working. If they were working in place of the foreigners, all we'd have to do is pay them the same for working as they get now for not working, and all the 'foreign' jobs would be British.
Why bother with these questions?
Nobody in a position to make a difference actually reads them, much less takes any notice.
british workers should have priority re employment,,,,,,,,,,,but the difficulty is getting them out of bed and away from their computers, ( obviously not all unemployed youngsters ) and they get paid to stay where they are.
no, because British workers on benefits do not want to clean toilets and work at car washes, they want to come off £25 grand benefits and walk into £30 grand jobs!!
We've got votes. People in power may not read what we say, but they should see that poll and realise that any party that promised to deport all foreign labour and make all those British unemployed do the jobs, although at the same rate as they now get for not doing anything, would be elected by a landslide !
Fred I would not vote for any party that promised that!!
I'd vote for them, seriously, its about time this problem was addressed. In Canada an employer has to prove he or she has advertised the job and had no Canadian citizen apply or be suitable for the position before giving a foreign worker the position.
