Is there no end to EU crazy legislation?

/// Products with parts from several different countries would have their origin defined on the basis of where the most expensive component came from. The proposal has split Europe. While the British and German governments oppose the change, it is being supported by Italy, Spain and Portugal. ///

Depends on the definition of "made" doesn't it?

I wonder what they're trying to stop?
surely no one reads the Express its a load of twoddle , its only good for the crossie. There is a new cure costing less than a pound for everything from a pain in your eye to cancer as front page every day!
I think you'll find that the most expensive parts of many things are made in the UK and Germany, so it's more like "made in Britain will appear on products not actually made in Britain, just using a British made part". Maybe this is why Spain support it - labour is cheap, things get put together there, and then they can sell it to the patriotic British public?
[please note: I have not read the article, only AOG's excerpt]
Anything and everything British - Seems like we are not very popular in the EU - wonder if our economic system working is something to do with it.
And I thought this was a story alluding to the proposal that all birth certificates carry the EU symbol... :)

I seriously doubt that those proposing this change will be able to gather sufficient support to push it through.
Sounds like quite a good idea really.

Where something is finally assembled in one country with components from lots of different countries where is it 'made in' ?

Won't happen of course because the UK and Germany are in opposition.

Frankly this should happen more and more if we played an active role in the EU - we're the two largest economies and would dominate - but while we sit on the sidelines being difficult it allows the mainland countries to sideline us

/// A handbag designed and produced in England but using Italian leather would have to be labelled “Made In Italy”. ///

Perhaps it would be wise to read the whole article before making a comment?
/The proposal would allow a “Made In” label to be displayed only if at least 45 per cent of a product’s “value content” comes from the country specified./

This article is nonsense.

Using their example of an expensive handbag, if the cost of the British craftsmanship isn't a bigger part of the 'value content' than the imported Italian leather used therein I would be very surprised.

On the other hand, if the final manufacture in Britain hasn't added much to the 'value content' then its validity as a 'made in britain' item is rightly suspect.
/Perhaps it would be wise to read the whole article before making a comment?/

Perhaps it would be wise to think about a subject before believing everything one reads in a tabloid newspaper
Those AirBus 380s with Rolls Royce Engines will have Made in England on them.

Where as a handbag made with Italian materials, stitched together by a load of Poles in Stalybridge, will not.

Seems like a good idea.
Mind your manners AOG or you'll be out.
I wonder if the 27million British Legion Poppies made in China will be affected?
Most of paper for newspapers originates in Scandinavia. It would be amusing to buy a Daily Mail with 'Made in Finland' under the madthead
Masthead
I have a micrometer, complete with a neat little wooden box, stamped "Moore & Wright Sheffield England". I would think that the steel it is made of is the more expensive component of it, so that is the wright way to stamp it.......Ok, I'll get me coat:)
It's intended to stop goods made in China but merely assembled or labelled here being described as made in Britain. As drafted, it sounds as though the ideal will not be realised in all, or most, cases.

Surely you would not object to "made in the EU" labels on British goods , would you, AOG ?
What price do you put on artistic or intellectual content? The mass of the material in a newspaper will have been made in Finland or some other timber rich country. But the value of the paper is in the news and ideas printed on the paper.

The Daily Mail is, I believe, owned and financed through offshore trusts and companies, for tax reasons. What should it be labelled as ?

Please tell me Ed, have I broken any Answerbank rules in my reply to you, if I had said the same to another ABer who chose to post the same, would I have also been as rude to face being expelled?

just asking the question, nothing more.
