Newsnight has just announced that only 1 per cent of us belong to a political party. Do you? Why? Do you know anyone who does? I used to belong to the Conservatives but that was only because my wife was an A-list candidate for the Party. She noted, with dismay, that most members, making the average, were women and well over 60. Odd to think that they were on selection committees for candidates, though she was selected.

I knew the barman at the conservative club and he let me drink there without asking for a membership card , does that count?

we can all do it, that labelling lark, what does it serve in the long run, human beings all, trying to make our way in the world, no better and no worse than anyone else. some are of course, but the general populace are not, the bad uns will be the rapists, murderers, others not really
No - never have.
No apologies from me emmie ! If the last 24 hours hasn't proved me right about BNP-lite, than I'm not sure what would.

Actually someone on AB yesterday suggested a new name for UKIP...........BNP-in-suits. I am giving this serious consideration for use in the future.

By the way, check my new post on NEWS for some exciting news about the BNP !
drivel mickey, it doesn't serve anyone, because at the end of the day the man got the point across, and believe me i know people from all sections of the community, society, and many believe that much of the money that has been given not just by our government but from British people to charities around the world is squandered. Why is that there are extraordinarily poor people around the world, living on a few pence a day, some blame capitalism, don't agree, however once in power, people like Mugabe, and indeed any despot wants to keep control, he doesn't want well educated challenging people, but those he can keep under, keep them poor, He is not alone, lots more like him, education for people is the key, that is the mainstay of a decent society, education holds the key to poverty. People in Britain not so very long ago were denied education, the ability to write, calculate and be masters of their own lives. It took a long time but we got there, now education is for all who choose to take it up, that is not the case for many across the world. You also need more than education but its a very big start.
no apologies are needed, however you have to start seeing the bigger picture.

Now you're being deliberately naughty

;-)

I've never belonged to a political party.

And frankly - I'm surprised at that, because I've always considered myself 'political'.

But as a society, we've all got a lot more individual and a lot less collective. If you look at church attendance, football club membership, membership of trades unions and political parties - they've all decreased since the 1950s (the peak for many of those institutions).
Mikey, as you suggest, see your new post in News. You haven't been proven right.

Er...how did UKIP get into this thread? Are their PR men working overtime?

"You can be a member of a Conservative club without being a member of the conservative party, they are two separate things. Our local Con club is full of lifetime Labour voters, they are only there for decent/ cheap beer and a comfortable seat."

that didn't used to be the case, if you wanted to join the con club, you had to become a party member and promise to vote con.
