Yes it is disturbing. Why would any sane person do things like that?

Changing the subject a little, it is hardly surprising that many men are anti feminist, Gromit. From my time in university it became abundantly clear that feminism has nothing to do with equality, it is to do with female dominance, getting their own way, and considering men little more than an unfortunate irritant. Before university I was naive enough to think the pressure group only wanted justice (albeit for females only). How foolish I was.

well we have men, presumably they are men, hiding themselves behind their keyboards, not openly displaying their hostility, i am told that is how it's done now, anonymity is all. If some one said those things to me face to face i would be off the to the police, but of course they don't, you can say anything you like on line, or so it seems. I think its creepy and wrong..
These social network sites present an open door to anyone who gets their kicks out of sending messages of the kind described. They always existed, but in the past they had to confine themselves to writing letters. Every celebrity got those. Even some defence counsel in high profile trials got them. The odd thing about that was, that prosecuting counsel never got them.
But that's the thing. Neither Facebook nor Twitter *Are* anonymous. People think they can hid behind a screen but there have been more and more cases of the police tracking these lowlifes down, and a few of them ending up behind bars.
Blimey, OG . What examples of feminine dominance being sought do you have?
I don't keep a diary of them but it's all about, "We must have our way on this regardless whether it's fair", isn't it. Dismissed that pressure group a long time ago. When a group that believes in equality comes about hopefully it'll take over the interest instead.
Don't think it was expressed quite on those terms, OG: "We must have our way regardless of whether it's fair" ! Just wondered whether you could think of any concrete examples of policies or action required which was not fair.
That's not my experience of the women's lib movement at all - we (the bra burners) wanted to be treated as equals, not treated as second class nobodies.
Question Author
as was mine boxy, just to be treated fairly, i didn't then, nor now hate men, some i have loved dearly, some just a little, even one or two not at all, but hate, no, such a negative word.
Old Geezer,

I do not believe campaigning to have Jane Austen on a banknote is extreme feminism and certainly not worth being threaten with rape and death for.
It is horrible behaviour, but sadly there are people out there that are horrible.

This lady claims to have had 50 death threats an hour for 12 hours. That sounds rather a lot. I would have to see them but I am tending to feel she may be exaggerating the number and content.
Question Author
threatening to kill or rape a person is pretty serious in my book. I hope she gets some help, or at least closure on this
Question Author
of course why wouldn't she exaggerate, oh my word, do you never ever think that this could happen, one would be enough, wouldn't it?
i received these disturbing txts from someone i hardly knew and called the police, who were incredibly supportive and told me if i heard from the man again in whatever way to contact them.
Exaggerating Gromit? Surely you can't be suggesting there's some threshold for the number of rape and death threats before matters become unacceptable?

//Initially, she was the subject of several offensive tweets, but these died away after about a day. She was then subjected to hundreds of tweets, which suggests that she was targeted by a group of Twitter users.//

Humbersloop

Thank you, I had not seen that. I would have expected several or a handful to be normal. I would not think several hundred to be normal. If there is a common denominator to an orchestrated attack, then that would make detecting and prosecting the culprits easier.
My curiosity makes me ask whether it's the woman, the subject of her campaign or because they can that makes these people send such messages. The warped feeling of power?
I doubt many would even know who was on the present bank note...they never do at pub quizzes.
Had she been campaigning for pink paper in ladies loos would she perhaps have had the same response from these men?
It seems once one creep does it others simpletons follow....but I could be wrong. I know not how twitter and tweeting works...:-(
So yes, it's disturbing that a woman can be threatened in this way and surely there is the technology available to stop it....or isn't there?
ah well, see, gness, pink paper in ladies' loos isn't going to affect men but having a female face on THEIR £10 notes (assuming they get out enough to earn any) is a gross invasion of male space.
course it's about power gness - it's a "shut it, uppity woman" response which, I think sadly, may well have come forward from some - and I stress some - men, whatever the subject to hand

I suppose sales of green ink have plummeted since Twitter & Facebook allowed poison penners to vent their spleen on-line?
I can't imagine what it would feel like to be the sort of oddball who spends time doing something like that then....I feel quite sorry for them. What a way to live.....there must be no joy...just bitter creepiness....Oh well..:-(
// ah well, see, gness, pink paper in ladies' loos isn't going to affect men but having a female face on THEIR £10 notes (assuming they get out enough to earn any) is a gross invasion of male space. // What a load of crap this is
I don't care if it is a picture of Bugs Bunny on banknotes just send any unwanted ones to me ( address to follow).

WR.
