Down here on the coast, we'd ban them but for another reason - they sail out to sea, and the lifeboat has gone out on several occasions as they are easily confused with distress signal flares.

Ignoring the obvious racist conotations of that statement,

LOL, Gromit, not racist at all, it's a fact !.

Agreed Old Geezer!
You have Poles that swarm?

That I would like to see.
A neighbouring farmer lost £5000 worth of hay last year because some pillock in the village thought it would be nice to set some lanterns loose on his 40th birthday.
.

Yeah I agree with pinko wet Gromit

You have a sea of petrol in your garden
and someone throws a fag end into your garden and lights it

and you say o! we should chop the hands off smokers or seal their mouths - smokers are baby-killers

i was watching the news earlier, it was on a celebration, not sure what exactly, in Poland, and there were thousands of the things being let go, what a nightmare for aircraft...

Oh and Gromit before you pull the race card yet again, my reply was to em.
Didn't relise that The Poles where a different race !.
Pikey see, pikey do.
Tonyav

I have seen tv pictures from china of thousands of lanterns being released. Are there any Chinese people in West Bromich? Do they ever swarm?
It seems almost impossible to conduct any discussion here these days without someone bringing 'race' into it. For Gawd's sake! Stick with Chinese Lanterns - unless of course, being Chinese, that's racist too. ;o)
LOL, get back to your tree hugging Gromit, or work out for yourself what a figure of speech is.
Naomi it is thingey's law isnt it ?
the one I inadvertently plinged in one of your threads....

as soon as one invokes Nazis the thread should self terminate because everything that should besaid has already been said, and now it is repeats and abuse
Hey if you are the first to notice, N
you could call it Naomis' lemma of Thingey's law !

and be famous for more than 15 mins !
Godwin.

Godwin's law
I mean its a pretty stupid idea isn't it, set fire to something and let it go...if it was thuggy types doing it with rags and a coathanger there would be all hell to pay, but because its a marketed product its "ok"....how stupid is that?
I agree the fire was serious, but perhaps the plant shouldhave been better protected.

I feel that it is a bit extreme to ban them though.

I do like the last line of your link em:

//In their defence: they look pretty...//
Having had part of our garden set on fire by one, I can't say I'm in favour of the things at all. The idiots down the road who set it off didn't realise there was any risk until a couple of fire engines turned up to put the fire out.
One has to wonder...how have the Chinese coped with these lanterns...over thousands of years...?
sp China, until recently was a lot less populated than the UK, more open space, less aircraft overhead, less busy sea lanes, less care about pets, livestock and wildlife and who cares if you trash a peasant farmer's crop or burn down his house?
"and who cares if you trash a peasant farmer's crop or burn down his house?"

The peasant, presumably...

Could be a Tad annoying!
