Flight mode won't allow you to use it for phone calls.
Putting your phone onto flight mode will switch off all communications that you can get via your phone. That effectively disables your signal. You won`t be able to go onto the internet or get a mobile signal (for text messages etc). I don`t know what type of phone you have (smart phone etc) but if you are overseas, you can keep your mobile signal active, just switch off the data roaming part of the signal

Ok thankyou. I have a HTC Wildfire s. I do not want to use it at all while overseas. so that is great. many thanks again.
There is no problem is you leave the phone switched on. If someone sends you a text that is OK but if you text them back it will cost you about 40p minimum. If someone phones you, it will cost you about £1.20 a min to speak to them so the golden rule is - don`t answer your phone.
If you don't want to use it at all turn it off and save the battery
agree with hc - if you don't want to use it, switch it off altogether. I've got an option on mine that you can switch off the internet (which I won't use on holiday) and just leave the phone and text options. Flight mode means you won't get calls at all.
