Annoying Mispronunciations Etc.

What annoys/infuriates you about the things people say? One that I hate is the almost universal "lonjeray" for "lingerie", which should be "lanjeree" (approx.). Not to mention "mischievIous for "mischievous" . . .

I struggle to cope with the various mispronunciations of my surname. I mean some of them are legitimate, it's not the easiest in the world to pronounce, but sometimes they seem to overlook the first R so that the first syllable becomes "gay". At High school, this was a bit of a problem. Especially when a teacher said it during register once.

rabet - thank you so much!!! I always rant and rave at the television when someone (usually American) refers to 'lonjeraay' - no such word! And I'm also with you about the extra syllable in 'mischievous'.

I probably won't get any sympathy for whining about 'harrass', though. The accent should be on the first syllable, but since Frank Spencer things have gone downhill

New pronunciations become right pronunciations eventually, so it's just natural evolution. In about a hundred years "lonjeray" will be as correct as "linjeree".

Though having said that I seriously don't like the American "mir'" for mihruh = mirror.

Not just a word as such, but the film 'Love Actually' when it is pronounced with the emphasis on the word Love - it would have been better had they put a comma after it.
