This was under discussion on LBC radio's phone in early this morning, and everyone who telephoned or text the radio station, said that they would if they could afford it.
If that is a fair section of the population, it is most frightening, and surprise, surprise most if not all blamed the immigration policies of the last Labour Government, and that the possibility of Labour getting into power at the next election is far too frightening to contemplate.

A lot of people have a stylised, idealistic view of how Britain should be: for many (not all) it's the 1950s, when Britain was predominantly white, there were no human rights laws and everyone knew their place. The Britain of the original Thomas The Tank Engine series illustrations for example (!)

I think there's a lot wrong with the UK. There aren't a great deal of opportunities for young people, our corrupt media is constantly given far more credence than it deserves, and while I disagree with those who sensationalise it by claiming we live in a dictatorship, I can't honestly say that I consider myself a citizen of a democracy either.
There's massive levels of inequality between parts of the country - there are areas of severe social deprivation where people just can't get out, as recorded by Nick Danziger in the 90s (and despite Labour's assurances, I'm fairly sure have not somehow vanished into thin air in the intervening time). We have an excellent system of higher education, with more than our fair share of the top academic institutions in the world - and yet huge numbers students from particular income brackets have been effectively excluded because of the debt it would place on them.
Having said that, I don't hate it here. I wouldn't call myself 'proud' to be British, but I still think there's a lot to like. While it's somewhat damaged, I'm very skeptical of the claims made by people like Winstone about the NHS (my cousin works in a hospital in London) and can't help but feel they're a bit sensationalised. There are some beautiful towns, and depending on where you live, of course, it's not nearly as dangerous as the media would have you think.
I also think people in the UK have a tendency towards a subtle kind of open-mindedness and tolerance for people with different viewpoints that I suspect is rarer elsewhere than we might think. Foreign friends who I talk to often seem to have trouble with the idea of disagreeing with your government, or an old person, or someone in authority. In the UK, they're fair game - and that's a good thing. We also have a long history of pretty epic changes to our society happening relatively peaceably - the British aren't strangers to change or difference, and that's something to be proud of.
Would I emigrate? Probably, but more out of desire to see other places than any kind of hatred for the UK. As I say, there's a lot wrong but I don't hate it here.

On the contrary OAG. Our nation is becoming more enriched and harmonious with the world. We pay high taxes in order to maintain our excellent benefit system and our 100% free health care system.
We need less people like him living in the UK spreading about all this negativity. We need more immagrants who actually feel privaledged to be here, work hard and most of all dont winge.

As an aside, I find it really interesting that some posters on the thread (I'm thinking particularly of Jake, but I'm sure he's not alone), seem to judge our country's "rank" (i.e. whether it's gone to the dogs or not) by its international influence.
Is this really an effective way of judging how good/desirable/sexy a country is? You could feasibly live in a country that has huge international influence but is otherwise a dank sh1thole. Statesmen strutting around at big important conferences really doesn't have much bearing on quality of living.

It was also mentioned today that offenders will get 15% off their sentence for pleading guilty which would possibly mean Chris Humgh getting a lighter sentence than Vicky Price.

People keep banging on about "taxes", look around Europe, we are actually one of the lowest taxed countries, If you want to see crippling taxes go and visit the Irish Republic they would make your eyes water. Since this so called period of Austerity has started most countries have "jacked" up their taxes to the point now that the UK actually looks desirable. Italy/Greece/France/Germany they are all now going after the wealthy in society and taxing them harder. One of our fellow workers decided the UK was too high on taxation so decided he would look else where in Europe to live in order to pay less tax, after 1 month and a lot of research he's v quietly dropped the idea. The grass is always greener, or not so in this case.
