Perhaps there was no such thing as 'Mad Cow disease' all along considering that it was supposed to be contaminated 'beef' in mass produced 'convenience' foods and cheap products when we now find that there were 'meat mixes' in practically all? Reason to continue making my own vegetable lasagne and steering clear of burgers and minced beef if there ever was one.
The fact that really puzzles me - it's not actually made by Findus, but by a "third party"!
Question Author
No doubt the third party will have Irish connections as has been revealed so far!!
If people knew what went into beef mince -even mince steak -they would not eat it -OH had a PT job as a meat cutter in a large supermarket chain and for that reason we have our own electric mincer and mince real meat from a farm shop and OH makes his own sausage using belly pork and shoulder. Unfortunately some people have to buy ready made products and its ridiculous that they are not getting what is on the packet. Horse meat is not farmed in this country and therefore not traceable for drugs that can affect humans such as phenylbutazone and dewormers
Question Author
magsmay you are very fortunate you have OH so knowledgeable about butchery, some of us are unfortunately not in the same position, and have to trust other people.
I don't know a lot about horsemeat but I think its supposed to have a blue tinge when its raw.
I recently used a packet of Donald Russell mince to make burgers. It was a disgusting bleurgh full of sinew and things I don't want to dwell on. Given that DR sells itself as a high end butcher I was horrified by how poor the mince was.

I will continue to use my butcher, and watch him trimming and mincing the meat in front of me.
Who actually eats Findus Beef lasagne?
I worked for a jam factory. we made jam for tesco, asda, marks and sparks etc. we had total quality control and excellent hygeine, all machine and work areas were stainless steel, and were super steamed every time a shift ended. the factory went bust because the retailers could get it cheaper abroad and we lost the contracts. wonder what the jam factories look like in albania???. same as the meat pies and burgers, the foreign factories have different standards to us.
Be wise, make your own burgers and pies. Findus?? trust no one.
now they have said it's possible it's all horsemeat in the lasagne, and more products of theirs besides, talk about being misled.
It's now 99 to 100% horse instead of beef. Basically a Horse Lasagne.

What I haven't worked out is if it is criminal activity trying to make a profit, how a large company manages to deal with criminals. Even if it's a rogue buyer employee, it surely can't be easy to hide one off payments to irregular sellers.

What they said on the radio today is that at that level of illicit horse meat drugs given to horses may have got into the food since the checks would have been skipped.
Why is all this food being destroyed? What a disgusting waste, there's nothing wrong with it. Why not just sell it off cheap. I would buy it because I am not one of those namby pamby idiots who will turn their nose up at anything without even trying it. Or even donate it to the starving of the world.
Dave, if People don't want to eat a Gee Gee, that doesn't make us idiots. By the way, you're welcome to the lot, bute an all!
Because it has got a banned drug in it, used on racehorses, according to Sky News.
At least if there's plenty of bute in it your arthritis will ease off -
Now we know what happened to Shergar:-(
My OH is convinced the next scandal will be retired greyhounds being put in the food chain.
Not much meat on them though is there?
lasagne is an anagram of 'nag sale'
No I don't suppose so Ladybird, the bones might come in useful for stock though. Urgh!
