Someone is using my dustbin to dispose of their empty vodka bottles. They're half bottle size and each wrapped so that they wouldn't clink as they were carried and all in a plastic carrier bag. It's sad to think that someone feels they need to go to these lengths to hide their drinking. And if the drinker has family they'll know, bottles in their bin or not.

It is sad Sandy, there was a lady opposite my mums started doing it, leaving bottles all over the village at one point, it got the better of her in the end though!
You'd be surprised. People live with secret addictions for years.
Its sad, but unfortunately its a way of life for some people.
The family may not know how bad his case is, probably doesn't. It is astonishing how alcoholics pass undetected. He may be at the stage where his family thinks that he likes a drink. They would be horrified if they knew just how much alcohol he was drinking.Notice that these are half bottles. These are fairly easy to conceal in a coat or briefcase. I suspect that it what he is doing;drinking 'on the road' or at work.
the fact that it is vodka may be relevant when it comes to deception
When I used to walk my dog every morning before work I'd see a guy pull up in a Jag near some common ground with a litter bin situated there.
Each time, he would produce an empty whiskey bottle from a plastic bag and place it in the bin, invariably on his way to work.
I had a lodger who rented the top floor of my house. When he moved out we found vodka bottles hidden everywhere. He had no one to hide them from!!!! Denial...
oh dear, how sad. I proudly put my empty voddy bottles in the reycling bin.

Could be teenagers. When I was young a big group of us used to buy a carry out and stash the empties in someone's bin - all done very secretly and carefully so as not to get caught.
Apologies Sandy, I did not know it was your bin :-)

More seriously, from experiences with a particular poor soul I knew well, the half bottles will start to become full bottles as tolerance grows.....
ummmm, your lodger hiding bottles reminds me of a friend in AA. He called a plumber, who went up in the loft with him. The plumber found, lashed to the cold water tank, a bottle of vodka. Now, my friend lived alone so who was he hiding the booze from? Never mind the thought process that has a man equip himself with string and climb up into his loft with a bottle, just to tie it to the plumbing.

Hiding empty bottles is just hiding evidence. Hiding full ones is another matter. Alcoholics live in constant dread of running out of booze. So what we do is hide a bottle in an unlikely place. If we forget where we've put it, so much the better. If we run out of drink and can't get any until 8am, when the booze counter opens, we'll know we may find some somewhere, even if we have to strip the house to find it.
