Bazile - i would argue that the Internet is the major source of information and entertainment in our society - and payment to your Service Provider of choice does not make you 'privvy to their internal staff arrangements, any more than buying a quiche at M & S means you get to sit in on the board meetings!
My point was being made with response to the statement of '' voluntary financial contribution to a company '' - that company being the BBC - and not arguing as to whether or not we should know the fiinancial settlemnt to Miss Virdee
Bazile - Like a man in orthopaedic shoes - I stand corrected!
As a TV Licence buyer, going by aogs earlier response, how many shares do I get, and does the number increase on an annual basis?
Andy
I like that one -I'll try and work it into some future conversation , elsewhere :-)
Forgot to include the quote!

///And since the BBC is run on licence payer's money, they are the 'shareholders'.///

The Blatantly Biased corp has a history of throwing money around, thanks to its enforced licence fee from what its always considered a fast free flowing tap.

The people that pay this tax have every right to know how theri money is being spent.

the sooner this dinosaur is put out to pasture or compete on a level playing field with other media companies the better

would you pay a fee to tescos every year to keep them in business even though you dont use them ?
bazwillrun - if it was a tax, as opposed to a fee, then they would, but it's not, so they don't!
//would you pay a fee to tescos every year to keep them in business even though you dont use them ? //

well baz

we assume you pay taxes towards the Parks and Gardens you may never use, the Museums and Art Galleries you may never visit and the Public Buildings, Statues and National Monuments you may never see

It is judged that they make a beneficial contribution to our society

Just as BBC TV, Radio, Online make to our Media industry and social environment

By comparison, the loss of Tescos would hardly make a significant difference to our retailing environment, others would replace it just as they replaced Safeway and Somerfield
Andy

Semantics , when you are talking about the TV licencer fee - in my opinion
tax was meant to be in quotes but as said , semantics.

Not if those were the agreed terms- confidentiality works two ways.
Maybe the info will come out in the annual accounts though.
But

Seems like we do have a say.

Bazile and bazwilrun - i don't think this is semantics. A tax is not a fee and a fee is not a tax, they are different entities entirely.

The BBC Licence is a fee, it is not compulsory to pay it - and payment of it does not offer the same rights and benefits as those afforded to shareholders of limited companies - which is the crux of the initial argument.
So aog, the BBC Trust will tell you (a valued licence payer) the details of the settlement the BBC have made out-of-court with Ms Virdee?

I think you'll find that they are unable to provide that information - and rightly so
it's outrageous that every time I buy a pack of peas, the price includes their costs of advertising them on TV.

I should be able to hand Tescos an affidavit that I don't watch Sky and get a discount.
LAB do you work for the BBC ???
Who is LAB?
jno

No one is arguing about the make up of the costs of goods and services that you 'really have a chioce ' to have or not .

If i choose to subscribe to SKY that's my choice - however i should not have to pay a 'fee' to another broadcaster , in order to exercise that choice .
bazile

why not?

it's not on an assumption of any services rendered - although i would argue it's hard NOT to receive the benefit of one of the BBC services indirectly

it's a levy to ensure that anyone accessing broadcast media from any supplier is also contributing to the upkeep of the public broadcaster which maintains the highest standards without relying on commercial sponsorship or advertising.

You can buy into BUPA if you wish - but you still have to contribute to upkeep of the NHS
