This is probably a stupid question but I wonder how much (as in bottles of spirit or wine) a female of her weight would need to drink to kill yourself. Surely most would pass out before that happened?

The imbibing was voluntary, the dying was accidental.
She voluntarily drank the alcohol, and accidentally died. She didn't intend to die. She died by accident.
Because she didn't drink it with the intention of killing herself, she drank it voluntarily, as in, no on forced it down her and she died accidentally.
Well it was hardly deliberate and compulsory.

Accidentally on purpose!
There's no evidnce of that Mary, infact, if my memory serves me right, she was on the road to recovery from drug addiction and was turning herself around. Tragic waste.
It's perfectly possible - and her name's Winehouse.
I know a few people who died of alcohol poisoning- none of it was deliberate. Sad outcome for a very talented girl.
nobody tries to drink themselves to death

some people do use alcohol to commit suicide. That why the distinction has to be made by the coroner between what is accindental and what is purposeful.
that's mostly to wash down pills, though, isn't it, Booldawg? If you were just swigging Chateauneuf du Pape, I would have thought as JaneDoe says you'd pass out long before dying.
