Wouldn't it be far better if he simply pledged 50Million to The British Legion, so that they can continue to help past and present soldiers?

Would it not make more sense for this to be delayed until 2018 to mark the end of the war???

I don't have an issue with the cost of it...except I think if you want to target kids, you need to engage them in a completely different way. Sending a select few to France to report back? I'm not sure that will work. If I were charged with engaging as many young kids as...

Student ambassadors will travel to the battlefields to learn about the wartime experiences of people from their local community.

Student ambassadors
Does that mean a select few?

Yeah, a teacher and a couple of pupils to go look see ,then report back to the school.

Words are failing me on this one!
I think it is a fantastic way to commemorate the start of The Great War and make sure another generation appreciates that part of history.
I feel there is an awful lot they could do in Schools to mark this centenary without it costing £50 Million.

I don't think we should be celebrating the start of any war, especially one that cost millions of lives!

I'd rather, as ive said see the RBL get the money, or be ploughed into "something" to try an make sure it doesn't happen again.
I did say 'Mark the Centenary' - did not mean celebrate of course.
Whilst in France I took my kids to the cemetery at Omaha Beach, to make sure another generation appreciates that part of history.

I think this money will be seen as a holiday fund.

Your reply wasn't there when I started doing mine Mamya x
That's ok.
I agree with you Boo, it is a waste. The money could be better spent to benefit all students, not just a select few.
absolutely b00.

I think Dave's found the lost Blackadder script though

I'm not sure that will work. If I were charged with engaging as many young kids as possible, I would look to social networking to get the message across. But even then, it'd be an uphill struggle. As time goes by, we will feel less and less 'associated' with WW1, because there are fewer and fewer people who have first hand knowledge of the world at that time around now.
You mean this speech ?

If you read on it is only 2 pupils and 1 teacher from each school.
the last survivor of the war died in February

The war's worth remembering, but I'm not sure battlefield visits are necessary, any more than they are for Waterloo or Azincourt.
far better approach, I agree sp

that's the one dave: I was going to mention that there's a general election before 2018 and, not that anyone would be cynical enough to milk 2014, o no....
The Prime Minister said he hoped the events would 'honour those who served, remember those who died and ensure that the lessons learnt live with us for ever'.

We learnt flump all from WW1 .... hence The Second World War.

And there will be another.... perhaps a 'War to end all wars' ....?
The battlefield visits account for only 10% of the budget.
Humber, I was thinking the same..... Shades of Maggie.
spectacular?? oh dear, in 100 years it's 0.00042% of what we spend annually on work shy scum. Now that's spectacular! Why do people moan about a halfpenny when £50 notes are being burned continually?
