Wouldn't it be far better if he simply pledged 50Million to The British Legion, so that they can continue to help past and present soldiers?

Would it not make more sense for this to be delayed until 2018 to mark the end of the war???

I don't have an issue with the cost of it...except I think if you want to target kids, you need to engage them in a completely different way. Sending a select few to France to report back? I'm not sure that will work. If I were charged with engaging as many young kids as...

amazing how he can find 50 million when people are homeless, starving . beggars belief he doesnot live in the real world
could you show the workings out in the margin on that please thatch? I'm not sure I follow your point in relation to b00's op and the British Legion
what about the 500m+ we give in foriegn aid? What about the 12 billion we give to our EU enemies. Really people this is a drop in the Ocean.
yes humber the benefits bill is 120bn divide that into 50m, it's known as arithmetic, they used to teach it in schools.

"they used to teach it in schools"

Not any more, they take 'em on jollies to "celebrate" the start of wars :-)
A 2 minute silence would be enough and won't cost a penny.

There are plenty of programmes on Discovery channel for students to watch about what happened in the trenches.

As for giving £50m to the British Legion, a large chunk of that will get creamed off by the fat cats who run it.
I don't think anyone is celebrating Boo.
Thank you lozzer, quite

I'm still unclear about £500m in foreign aid figure, or the //over 100 years// reference and I don't understand who our //european enemies// are in this context
£50m is a drop in the ocean to the RBL. They are doing a great job.

We spent £90 million last year on health and welfare for the Armed Forces community - that's £1.7 million every week
We've committed £50 million over 10 years to help serving men and women who are wounded, injured or sick. The money will be used to develop the Battle Back Centre, an adaptive sports facility in Shropshire and to fund the operating costs of four Personnel Recovery Centres in the UK and a Personnel Recovery Unit in Germany. The facilities are part of the MoD's Defence Recovery Capability initiative, delivered in partnership with Help for Heroes and The Royal British Legion, alongside other Service charities and agencies.

Have you got your sums right, thatcherite?
Perhaps the money could be better spent on school facilities and a large card delivered to 10 Downing Street inscribed "Stop living in the bl00dy past!"
well maybe not spot on but the point is that £50m is irrelevant in the scheme of things that's the real point. So many are penny wise and pound foolish.
<<yes humber the benefits bill is 120bn divide that into 50m, it's known as arithmetic, they used to teach it in schools. >>

But not yours?

it might be irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, but it's still a hefty wodge of dosh, which im sure could be better spent elsewhere than taking a couple of grumpy teens to a muddy field somewhere, where they won't even bother lifting their heads from their mobiles to look at. They won't even care about the relevance of it all, its so far removed from what they (and us) are living in.
Perhaps Boo but why single this out? There are vast wastes of cash going on all the time. Doesn't the 120bn benefits bill worry you just a teensy weensy bit?
Question Author
Yes, but this is what I picked up on earlier.
"spectacular?? oh dear, in 100 years it's 0.00042% of what we spend annually on work shy scum. Now that's spectacular! Why do people moan about a halfpenny when £50 notes are being burned continually? "

"yes humber the benefits bill is 120bn divide that into 50m, it's known as arithmetic, they used to teach it in schools."

The amount spent on benefts in 2011/12 was just over £158 billion of which just over £104 billion was for pensioners.
It is two pupils from every secondary school in the UK at 10% of the budget.
£45m is being spent on other projects.
The money will be spent only on English state schools.
It is a spectacular, disgusting and cynical bit of political opportunism.
Cameron is trying to big up the one nation jingoism and union jackery which accompanied the Olympics and the Queen's jubilee just weeks ahead of the Scottish Independence Referendum. What utterly crass behaviour to link the memories of the fallen in the "war to end all wars" with the Queens Jubilee.
In any event, how sick does one have to be to celebrate the start of a completely pointless war which cost millions of lives. How can it be described as great?
I am sure many of our European partners will join in ...not.
