Further to my earlier question regarding the £10m scheme to set up uniformed youth clubs, today's Telegraph report on today's kids not wanting to let their mates see them marching, says it all.

Shame isn't it. When I was young it was a privilege to be in the Scouts or Guides (I couldn't because we couldn't afford to buy the uniform) so I looked on in envy.

How very, very sad, you have now made an old man equally sad.

I hope in today's world there are no such cases as yours Starbuckone, if there is I think it would be a good idea for all such groups to set up a second-hand uniform facility.

...agreed - or perhaps for the Government to set up a scheme where funds were allocated to poorer parents/guardians to pay for uniforms via a voucher scheme.

£10million should just about do it.

(Sorry - I literally couldn't help myself).

Enjoy the rest of your afternoon.
I understand where the kids are coming from, I myself find it hard to take a man dressed as a Snag seriously.

I also have no idea what sp's post means.
Sadly, many parents don't give children enough encouragement from an early age to join such organisations - and unless that encouragement is forthcoming, such activity is subsequently perceived to be 'uncool'. And for all I know that could be a word well past its sell-by date now. How 'uncool'. :o)

No why should some expect the Government to 'PROP' them up all the time?

Time for some to stand on their own feet.
AOG, but the fact is some people don't stand on their own two feet and I think the children of such parents would be very well served by organisations like the Scouts. It's a good grounding, and personally I would have no objection to helping fund the cost of uniforms.
Yes - I agree with Naomi, especially as I experienced this deprivation. However, I do appreciate that it was vastly different when I was young.

Exactly Some these days don't know the real meaning of the words poverty or deprivation.
""Exactly Some these days don't know the real meaning of the words poverty or deprivation. ""

Have to agree with that one!
AOG, I would say that's a good thing.
A little taste of it wouldn't do anyone any harm IMO....real world and all that!
AOG unfortunately there are plenty that know the meaning of poverty today!!
FGT, poverty holds a different definition now - and personally, I really wouldn't wish the poverty of yesterday on the children of today.
naomi - in my job I see people suffering real poverty - I'm talking about not enough food to feed their children.
The people who are suffering from real poverty will not be able to leave an answer for you aog as they have no internet connection.

That's easily sorted, most pubs these days have their own Internet access so they can take their mobile smart phones in there.

Duh!
FGT, //in my job I see people suffering real poverty - I'm talking about not enough food to feed their children. //

Are they not claiming benefits? And if not, why not?
What can we expect when the peep toed, pinko, anti everything, sandal wearing crusties have told us for many a long year how being British is some form of fascism to be despised?

You will be accused of racism, homophobia, and all sorts of horrific and unacceptable 'crimes' like pride in your nationality. Therefore, harmless pursuits like scouting, cubs, girl guides etc are being phased out and receive no funding in the face of millions being chucked at 'underprivileged kids' aka the thugs in our midst.

So this is what it's come to.
