David Harewood seems to be inferring this, what is he suggesting that just because he is black, special leading roles should be created for him?

Seems to me to be just the same as a white actor complaining that there are not enough leading roles for him in 'Bollywood' movies.

Do you think what I put is not true, aog ? Thought it was common knowledge that actresses of a certain age said that in chat shows and generally.

Shouldn't that have been, "What was wrong with the teaching of English, 85 years ago"?
Nice one AOG - 30-15!

I have no reason whatsoever to doubt that claim Fred, but I was just suggesting that you, yourself might care to raise that particular issue in it's own right.
AOG is this your real persona or an act for the internet?

No. Not necessarily.

That's a comment on writing style.

Mine was an identification of your misuse of basic English.

When was the failure to construct a basic English sentence not a misuse of basic English?

If you had written it backward would that have also been classed as a writing style?
Old Git

When you wrote my last post you apparently understood it so clearly it was not at fault in terms of its basic construction.

Sorry, when I put When you wrote my last post

I really meant 'when you read my last post'

You see, using the correct words does actually help the communication process.

What do you find so difficult about teaching yourself the difference between the words 'read' and 'write'?

Sorry, I meant 'imply' and 'infer'

Keep digging, but remember whilst doing so, if you set yourself up as the AnsweerBank's English Teacher, you should first make sure that your own English is so impeccable that it cannot possibly be criticised, even by mere mortals such as I.
Old Git

It's a poor state of affairs when someone suggests that only AnsweerBank's English Teacher would be interested in whether the correct words are used in such a basic context as the difference between imply and infer.

It might be better if you graciously accepted your use of English has a few 'gaps' or quirks.

That's ok. We all have those.

Instead, you seem to have a wilful intransigence.

I also seem to recall you have mentioned using spell checker. Does that mean you type your posts into Word so you can check them before copy and pasting them here?

Do you have some deep-seated insecurity about your written english?
I think Adrian Lester is a fantastic actor and he is not given race specific roles.

What I do find patronising is when there is a new mixed race relationship in a soap or drama and NOBODY comments on it. In every society there is at least one person who will make a remark, sometimes well intentioned but awkward, other times downright racist.

No certainly not, as an octogenarian I know my limitations, by the way 'English' is spelt using an upper-case 'E', not a lower-case 'e', oh dear, there I go again having to keep correcting you.

Incidentally, anyone of your young age and who considers himself a bit of an English expert, should at least be able to construct an intelligible answer, I am referring of course to your 16.17 post.
^^
That'll be a YES then

For goodness sake. Give it a rest.
Yes Darling xxx
I do think he was implying that, and it's a pity as there are any number of excellent British black actors who could slot into any role.

Perhaps it takes time, after all how many black actors were there on the stage in Britain, years ago. For example taking leading Shakespearian roles as they do now. I hope they give him a drama of his own here, he is a fine actor and is very nice looking into the bargain..
I wasn't talking to you :-) x
Agreed em

Actors waiting for auditions is (sadly) a very common situation.

Harewood is good - he'll get work no problem in time.

There are so many more opportunities for actors in the USA - many of our people are over there working - and proportionately more for black actors of course.
[i]I wasn't talking to you :-) x[i]

I have to be honest

I am relieved to hear that :-)
I know many of our actors have gone to America and crashed and burned. But it's gradually getting better. As to David Harewood he will get more work, perhaps he should petition for stage work, here and in US, it's a good way to promote yourself, and not just wait for lucrative TV roles. Other actors have done that then gone on to have good careers in TV and film.
He would make an excellent Othello, and could just as easily play Iago.
