Will the ban really discourage youngsters from smoking? Probably not. Will more people stop smoking because of this new ruling? Probably not. No doubt that some smokers who do not necessarily have a favourite brand, will be unable to compare prices in the future. And packets which may carry a promotion, will be hidden from the consumer.

My local supermarket have a sliding door cabinet holding the cigarettes. I'm sure the assistant will soon be bored with opening it just for a packet of fags!

Yet the 'small' shopkeepers have another three years' grace before they are obliged to hide the ciggies. Strange law that - one rule for one and one rule for others. Typical though and government-consistent.

"Will the ban really discourage youngsters from smoking?" gotta try something though haven't they?

"Will more people stop smoking because of this new ruling? " No, probably not- the ever increasing price of them will be far more effective!

"No doubt that some smokers who do not necessarily have a favourite brand, will be unable to compare prices in the future." Arent the prices displayed on a board?

"And packets which may carry a promotion, will be hidden from the consumer. " no cigarettes or tobacco packs have promotions on them, haven't for a long while now.

"My local supermarket have a sliding door cabinet holding the cigarettes. I'm sure the assistant will soon be bored with opening it just for a packet of fags! " yes, no doubt they will, as I will when my shop (Co op) does it, but what can you do?
It's total madness I don't smoke but would love to go and ask to see the selection of cigarettes and prices just out of badness.
No way will this stop people smoking,I fully understand goverment wanting to promote healthier lifestyles for people, but people have the right to choose.
If they did the same with wine I would be a right nuisance holding up the queue to look for the a bargain.

Thanks for your comment B00.

I don't think the prices are allowed to be displayed on a board.

Certain manufacturers put two packets of 20 in a promotion packet to sell at a slightly less price than two separate 20's. ie Windsor Blue.

This Government ruling certainly not a good idea in my view.

Hi pizza. Exactly. Where a number of similar products by different manufacturers are available, the customer should be able to compare prices before purchase. I'll join you in the wine queue.
/// I fully understand goverment wanting to promote healthier lifestyles for people, ///

If the government wanted to promote healthy lifestyles for people, they would make the selling of tobacco products illegal.

Oh no the hypocrites wont do that, where would they then get their huge loss in revenue from?
They are allowed to show a (plain) price board and they are allowed to open the display cabinet for people to look at the packets (as long as the person looking is over 18)

And I've bought tobacco with a promotional price on it in the last couple of weeks.
They have to try something so I suppose it's just a case of wait and see. I think once you make something illicit or mysterious it makes it all the more appealing to youngsters.

This is the frst stage of the bill , the next stage is to make all cigarette packs identical. Just a plain grey pack with the health warning taking up 3/4s of the space. The manufactures name and brand will have to be in very small print at the bottom of the pack on one side only.
What next, all video games bearing an over 18 classification label, to be in plain cases and placed 'under the counter' perhaps?
Went in town today and Tesco have the sliding doors hiding the ciggies etc and on leaving the store half a dozen staff standing there smoking.

Kinda defeats the object
"And I've bought tobacco with a promotional price on it in the last couple of weeks. "

Ahhh, price promtions, I thought SirP meant like "buy me and get a free toaster" kinda promotion.
I thought it would be cheaper to get your £1 channel ferry crossing and bring back your allotted allowance to escape all the bans they have at home. You have to feel some sympathy for the small shopkeeper who is only trying to make a living.
As a smoker i think it's pointless as is the plain packaging plan. I started smoking because a parent did and then a boyfriend. I wonder how many smokers started because they saw them in shops? It's only education about the health effects hitting home and the price that will finally persuade me to try to give up.
If no-one smokes, where are they going to get the £20Bn or so in VAT and duty, which goes towards treating all the alcohol related illnesses currently blocking up the NHS. This ban will only add more confusion, and shop assistants will suffer from shoulder and arm strain from the repetitive opening and closing of the shutters.
In the legislation banning the display of tobacco there is provision for price lists to be displayed, something which Morrisons at least have not cottoned on to yet. I shall have some fun next time I go. The girls already dread me coming as they know that when they open the sliding doors I will say in a loud voice, "Is that where you keep the dirty magazines as well?"
#If no-one smokes, where are they going to get the £20Bn or so in VAT and duty, which goes towards treating all the alcohol related illnesses currently blocking up the NHS#
in view of the fact that the fire service claim 50% of all fires are caused by smokers and a similar number of NHS patients are being treated for smoking related diseases, there will be more than enough .
no its pointless, and visible and advertised alcohol causes just as many social problems!
I have found that the garage near me sells more on promotion than the supermarkets so I will continue getting my ciggies from there for the next 3 years!
Putting cigs on display gives the message that they are a regular item, to be bought with the groceries. All the research shows this not to be the case and that tobacco is a very dangerous and addictive rug. Having given up many years ago, I still miss them though.
