Do you think that Tariq Jahan should have escaped a jail sentence, just because he appealed for calm during the August riots, a month after he had committed this crime?

/// The judge said Jahan deserved to be sent to jail but gave him a suspended sentence owing to his public appeal for calm during the August riots. ///

no, and i am amazed that this has taken so long to come out, seeing as how it was reported very briefly in the papers many months ago.
Nope.

Two separate incidents. Different circunstances.

If he is guilty of the earlier attack he should be punished.

What he did during the riots was very commendable, but should not influence the sentence.
Definitely no
gromit, it obviously has, wrong on all counts.
Gromit, agree 100%
Agree with gromit

this sets a dodgy precedent; commited a violent offence? quick go out and do something worthy and 'commendable'

could it be the judge was simply wary of punishing a hero/victim of the riots?
zeuhl, yes.
He was given a Pride of Britain award too wasn't he? Should maybe be taken off him .....
All a bit awkward isn't it?

What next?
Mother Theresa scammed my credit card?
Courts often take into account previous good character when determining a sentence. I don't see why they shouldn't take into account subsequent good character as well. I'm a great believer in the possibility of redemption.
he broke the blokes jaw in a fit of rage, that is assault with a capital A, i hope his victim is so forgiving.
Guilty of GBH so should be jailed.
Some folks get jailed for saying stuff on the internet these days, obviously breaking somebodys jaw is more acceptable.
mightywba, it isn't, but reckon he got away with it fairly lightly on account of his comments after the riots, but needless to say, The Pride of Britain award is a bit of a sham now.
Wasn't the fact that he is a Muslim taken into account?

Surely an oversight????????
As soon as I heard this story on the radio, I KNEW anotheoldgit would ask if the Judge was correct, I'm sure it's Pavlovian...

It's amazing how I seem to be constantly on the minds of some people, I can't possibly see the reason why.
Knowing that night follows day does not mean I think about it all the time.
