//A Home Office spokesman said: “...French rail security officers are also conducting additional checks on board trains to ensure passengers are correctly documented for the UK"//

Looks like they are helping us.
It wouldn't exactly be rocket science to quickly re-check tickets on arrival at St Pancras - give the overpaid, polyester clad, pocket hitlers of the Useless Krap Border Agency something to do to earn their corn.
// There are no passport checks for the vast majority of Eurostar travellers arriving at London’s St Pancras station, meaning illegal entry into the UK is relatively easy. //

Er, Why do the French and Belgians have to do anything. Check for illegals on the two hour journey, or check passports at St Pancras. Simples.
Checking at St Pancras will be too late won`t it. They`ll be here by then (and can claim asylum)

Yes but if they fail the checks, what do we do with them then?
brick up the tunnel
what ever gives you the idea there is a "point" to being in the EU?
If these migrants just wanted to pass through the UK, on their way to Ireland, say, would you want to keep them in order to help the Irish?
Already had illegal migrants jumping off trains as the Eurostar entered the tunnel at Folkestone, this idea "may" just exacerbate that problem, if as you suggest we recheck passports at St Pancras on arrival. Thus returning the "failed" migrant back to their Point Of Entry.

That would really mess up the timings for Eurostar/Eurotunnel, and the normal travelling public, with the last time this happened ALL trains through the tunnel were suspended for 8+ hours.
The definition of the word 'asylum' should be changed. When it allows the likes of Qatada and Long John Silver to get in we really have lost the plot. They should be returned on the next train.
