Well done, a step in the right direction. Hester will surely follow suit, won't he?

Can't believe it's taken him this long to decide over this dilemma after all the furore, it's a no brainer now for him after the honourable actions of the chairman.

I doubt it. As the bonus has been paid in shares he can't sell for two years, we can only hope they're worth nothing in two years, unless you have RBS shares yourself of course.

Surely we all (as taxpayers) are shareholders so I for one would rather see a rise in the share price

"Surely we all (as taxpayers) are shareholders so I for one would rather see a rise in the share price"

The Government will probably sell it off before then as they did with Northern Rock to Virgin. Apart from that do you believe we as taxpayers will ever profit from the share price? Any profit the Government make will be a drop in the ocean compared to our £1 trillion debt.
So , Dodger, it seems you would rather we lose even more money on RBS just so Hester loses some money on his share bonus than see a rising shareprice so we can sell RBS for more money than it's worth now. I don't follow the reasoning, sorry
If I thought for one minute the RBS share price will make any difference to the taxpayer I might agree with factor, but I don't.

When the time comes for the Government to sell RBS off, no doubt it will do a deal in the same way they did with Northern Rock, at a loss. That cost the taxpayer approx £25Billion!!!!

Why anyone in this bailed out bank deserves a bonus beats me. I wouldn't even pay them their inflated salaries. Hester gets £1.2M salary and looks likely to trouser a £1.00M bonus, it's obscene!! I wonder how much income tax he pays, or avoids paying?

If you disagree, tough, I can live with that.
He has finally declined this obscene bonus. Perhaps he has got a conscience after all.

Thankfully the weight of public opinion has seen Mr Hester reject his bonus, though it ought to have been the government who told him that he wouldn't be getting it.
