To summarise - "there was a lot more racism in football 20 years ago, so if black players face racial abuse today, they should put up and shut up":

http://www.dailymail....n-Ferdinand-game.html

Now I know that newspapers tend to publish articles to appeal to their readership demographics - but really...who in their right minds thinks that this is a valid argument?

You've accidentally made an interesting point AOG which is that if he hadn't included the word black, no-one would have cared - but why should the rest of the insult be acceptable? - it's pretty nasty even without the racist element.
Yes that is what I was trying to convey, thanks for highlighting it.

A person can be excessively insulted, but it seems that only certain groups are allowed by law to take action against their insulter's.
<<seems that only certain groups are allowed by law to take action against their insulter's. >>

Why would you think that?

If the situation had been reversed and Ferdinand had called Terry 'a f****n white c**t' that would have been equally unacceptable, equally illegal and just as likely to have received this level of media coverage.

"A person can be excessively insulted, but it seems that only certain groups are allowed by law to take action against their insulter's."

i believe the law is all encompassing in this respect, you are muddling injustice with lethargy and langour again (refer to other thread where you said pretty much the same, and so did i).
Terry should've called Ferdinand a 'f***in overrated c***' instead

He'd have been spot on then
LOL joeluke

'back of the net!'
The language on this thread's f****in appalling by the way.
^^^ Ha ha! How true! I don't usually swear!
"it's pretty nasty even without the racist element"
get over it, its only name calling

If ferdinand had any brains he should have called Terry a white C/unt
1 - 1 end of

its pathetic, its now a national story.
A bit of name calling , get over it, man up, sticks and stones etc
White players seem to be in a minority with some English teams. Why don't the blacks shut up or call them honkies or something.

Good point, why DON'T more black players use racist epithets? Why do we only hear about white players (and fan) abusing black players?

If you google 'black football racist' you literally can't find a single story.

I know, because I did this earlier to prove a point. There was a story last year about a black player who'd been fined for using a racist term to a white player and for the life of me, I can't remember his name.

But it sort of backs up a point doesn't it?

We can't say, "Oh, it's only racism if it's a white player", because thus far, that's all we have to go on!
SP

All that throwing of strawberries onto the pitch would be messy.

I suspect the only way a black player could use the term 'honky' would be if he could travel back to 1976, which is approximately when it was last used.
SP, //why DON'T more black players use racist epithets? Why do we only hear about white players (and fan) abusing black players? //

Back to the point I was trying to make I suspect. Perhaps it's because white people, if they've any sense, don't take offence at being described as white. Black people have to stop giving racists what they want.
Hey SP, Honky was used on another thread last evening, first time I had heard it used for years also.

Or perhaps they aren't racially abused by black players and fans?
SP, perhaps not, but perhaps they don't do it often because it simply has no effect - and that's the crux of the matter. The point is, when a white man calls a black man a "f***in black c**t", that's insulting, but not because the word 'black' is included. However, instead of taking offence at the profanities, which amount to the real insult, the black man ignores those and cries 'racist' because the only bit he really objects to is the word 'black'. Why? Why do you take exception to being told you're black? Think about it. Is that really an insult? I sincerely hope you don't see it as such, because by claiming it is, which is what you do every time you take offence at the word, you're agreeing with the racist that it is an insult, and therefore you're undermining yourself and every other black person in this world - which means you're giving the racist exactly what he wants, and so he continues. Why can't black people understand that? This really frustrates me.

Racists, like bullies of every description, thrive on reaction, so don't give them the upper hand by reacting as they intend, and expect, you to. If the word 'black' falls on deaf ears, the racist is defeated. Take a leaf out of Rosa Parks book and basically say 'Yes, I'm black. Now what have you got to say?'
There you go again again effing and blinding Naomi. I'm shocked. Ed - get a grip on this for f***s sake.
Haaaaaaaa! This place is a bad influence on me! :o)
