French LSD Mystery

I remember reading something a while back about a village in France where everyone started to go a bit potty. From memory it was blamed on bakers and something they were doing to the bread but there was a theory that some government secret service laced water (maybe) with LSD to test it's effects.

Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about and could point me to somehwere I could read more about it?

Sorry if it's a bit vague.

google 'ergot poisoning'
It was put down to Ergot which had been baked into the bread of the village.

Oh! That was quick. Was worried I might be accused of taking some.

Thanks!
More likely Ergotism. Ergot is a fungal disease of rye and ingestion can cause LSD like hallucinations.

I think that was Trim's response to markraes usual rude LMGTFY link...
I remember the story being recounted in " Operation Julie " an account of a big lsd case in the 70s . The towns wheat was contaminated by ergot and caused widespread hallucinations sorry can't recall any more detail .

Oh, I see. I hadn't clicked on that link yet.

Mark, if you don't want to answer a question seriously then why not flump off all together. No need to be a prick.
Have to admit I giggled at Trims post....!
I thought that was rather clever, I hadn't seen LMGTFY before. Sorry carry on.

askyourgran, it pops it regularly here.
MarkRae is such a useful, informed poster on this site, very helpful as a rule, it is a real shame to see him post in such a sarcastic way. I guess we all have our off days.
Yes really trim.

Well I'd like to thank everyone else for their helpful replies. Not sure where his post went but I obviously wasn't the only who didn't see its funny side.

Anyway, got some good reading material while I'm at work tomorrow :)

bit hard to google something if you don't have any specific words and names and only have a vague recollection...hence the need for a site like this...

but then markrae just loves this 'hilarious' link and the excuse to feel smug...
