it wouldn't be easy to replace him if he went: this is a coalition, not a standalone government where the PM can just name anyone he wants. Plus he's apotential right-wing rival to Cameron. So Cameron would prefer to keep him right where he is.
He *was* a right wing rival to Cameron.

Can anybody seriously see him winning a leadership contest now?
I am no fan of the Torys however was security breached, was it so wrong? Yes he should be told off, but ti lose your career for it seems a little strong.

And of course there is the question that it appears no one dare ask.
>>>>was it so wrong?

When any politician goes to meet people from another country or organization it is important that civil servants are there to document EXACTLY what was said and agreed so there is no confusion afterwards.

This is even more important when you are minister of defence.

To go to a meeting, AND take your "friend" with you (who has no security clearance), and take NO civil servants, AND discuss defence contracts, is a risky and dangerous thing to do.

A simple apology is not enough (and I am generally a tory supporter).

In the world of business this would be a sackable offence.
There is that but lets be honest here.

The News media is skipping around the implication of his sexuality.

and when it comes to leading major parties mud like that sticks.

Whether he's secretly gay or bisexual shouldn't matter but the Tory's will not elect him leader if they think he is.

A really competent minister might get an error of judgement like letting his wife into the MOD but I think the Tory right will be looking for another poster boy now.
Oh, for goodness' sake, no, Jake! Not Iain Duncan Smith again!
Dave re the question that no-one dare ask, I'm sure it's his own hair...
I cannot believe how totally lacking in common sense some of our MPs are and let's face it, basic honesty. After all the scandal of the expenses business you would think that anyone with an iota of sense in their head would tow the line and strive to be seen whiter than white. But no, here we have a senior politician who seems to have cotton wool between his ears and as a Tory supporter I could strangle him.
I'm not sure the right would mind, jake, apart from extreme anti-(possible)gays. Look at the motley crew being hailed by the Tea party in the USA; it seems they'll go for anyone able to make a noise, regardless of whether they're electable. I suspect the Tory right may feel the same way, ready to follow anyone not in hock to Clegg.
Are there any openly Gay members of the Tea party?

They're not big on tolerence for homosexuality - they booed this Gay soldier.

http://blogs.villagev...9/tea_party_audie.php

I don't think either the Tories or the Labour party would be brave enough yet to elect an openly gay leader - they'd reckon theat there's still too much silent biggotry and they'd lose votes.

MPs yes, Leader No

Weasel words from Dr Fox -

Taken from a letter in my newspaper today

//Isn"t it wonderful what you can say with words?"Mistakes were made,"
says Dr Fox,in which it becomes the fault of the mistakes,as he has made
them the subject of the verb, eliminated himself from the sentence and
neatly diverted the blame from the guilty party.//
Can anyone please explain his next statement?
Dr Fox:"When it comes to the pecuniary interests of Mr Werritty in those
conferences,I am absolutely confident that he was not dependent on any
transactional behaviour to maintain his income."?

diverted the blame from the guilty party.//
Personally I think he should fall on his sword. If I bought my mate to work I would straight out the door, he is in charge of defence.

Can't see the Tea Party backing any Gays, but then they are religious nutters not just far right and we all know how tolerant religion is.

Obnxy foxy----The Tory rabble-----whipped within an inch of their life???

Obviously you are not a Tory supporter, but why do you have to use such obnoxious expletives, to show your opposition to them?

Can't you string together a few words that show your contempt of the Tories, without the need for insults?

Not my words AOG,but borrowed for purposes of brevity
and anyway, you have some nerve to question my choice
of phrase.

// Can't you string together a few words that show your contempt of the Tories, without the need for insults? //

You mean something like these fine example...
/
/ Because you ranting Left-Wing nutters are a little short on brain cells, it is easy to excuse you for your lack of knowledge. //

// I think we can all take it as a load of left-wing propaganda. Having been found out for what you are Isn't it now time for you to have the courage to come out and admit you are a member of the looney-left? //

// That is priceless coming from the 'looney left' who hate anyone who oppose their looney views. //

// Oh it must be nice for the goverment to have at hand a multitude of fully paid up members of the looney left at their disposal. //

etc etc
