Ireland? I'm assuming the majority of them were/are Irish? But what of the younger generations?

Don't get me wrong, i've not much sympathy for these...well lets call them people shall we? But I don't think it's a simple case of saying "move on". Wherever they move to will soon have the local residents up in arms. Quite what an alternative solution would be, i've no idea.

B00. Surely obviously to wherever they already have permission to stay, or can gain it. If they can't then they need to register as homeless and join the rest of us in making our way in life in society, rather than sticking 2 fingers at it.

These are not poor people without resources. They have simply tried to gain permanent residences to suit themseloves and on the cheap by cutting corners such as the legal controls the rest of us adhere to.

If they were truly 'travellers' there are short stay caravan parks dotted around the country for their use but they don't want to do that.

I have no time whatsoever for them. They should live by the rules of our society or leave the country.

Zeuhl. What you say is true. They built, after a lot of process a short stay site for them about 4 miles from us a year ago after years of opposition. Built at ratepayers expense. It has never been used!!

If they ever manage to turf them from this place, which I doubt, they'll just move to another bit of green land and infest there instead.

They are not poor people, they are richer than most of us using this site. Their riches are not disclosed, I wonder why. They can afford to do what the rest of us do, rent or buy homes legally and build them on land with planning permission.

Well what do they want, are they travellers, then keep travelling, if they want to settle, then be like the rest of us and buy or rent and fit in!

I had the misfortune of travellers invading some spare land near where I live some years ago. The short time they were here was a nightmare. They used to defecate along the river path, leaving piles of it, plus soiled toilet paper! There were several burglaries in nearby houses when they were here, including mine - they stole my brand new yard brush and shovel while I was out one evening and they even stole a neighbour's little dog. He went looking for it on the camp and found it tied up outside a caravan! They all drove flashy cars with no tax discs and yet when this was pointed out to the police who came round to restore some order after all the harrassment, they turned a blind eye to it! I have no time whatsoever for these travellers after my experiences of them. Thankfully now, the land has become a retail estate with no more room for travellers. They do not abide by the same laws as the rest of us and think they have a divine right to live like this, no wonder they get people's backs up.

There's talk that this government is going to relax the planning laws. Maybe somebody at Dale Farm had a look into their crystal ball and saw that there new town would be retrospectively legalised.

in our area ' notsoyoungasiwas' some of the travellers have been given council homes, they still defecated, outside in the front gardens of neighbouring properties . Their dogs regularily bite passers and the local community felt threatened by their behaviour. They have now exchanged their council property and moved to the next village. Apparently they felt unwelcome. These people and their relatives have been in the area for decades and have still not learnt how to behave . We also now have a new community of travellers who have bought land and set up a site illegally . Over a bank holiday weekend in 2010. Then put in for planning whilst the local council office were closed. Which was refused. 18 months on and after being given a court order to not develope the site anymore. They continue to develope and have now started to put substantial mobile homes on the site. While local people are having planning for small extensions refused, for minor reasons. There is a feeling of great injustice, as the travellers appear to be getting away with ignoring court orders and planning laws.

go, but i doubt they will, they are citing one of the residents who has health issues, so can see them dragging it out for as long as humanly possible.
Ms Redgrave is a well known left wing activist, so why she doesn't suggest that she has space to house them all, then they can get off the green belt land they shouldn't have camped on in the first place.
