1) The Weimar Republic was unstable. Hitler promised stability and order, and people were prepared to sacrifice personal liberty for these.

2) There was a fear of Communism and a disillusionment in Socialism (which had been tried in parts of Germany).

3) Germany had a large Jewish population. Hitler believed that Liberalism, Communism and Capitalism were perpetrated by Jews, and played on people's prejudices, telling them that German culture and traditions were being undermined by Jews. Jews became a target for popular fear and frustration.

4) There was a dislike of foreigners after the way Germany had been treated in the years following WW1.

Just to add to these two excellent posts, three facts about humans.

1. They're angry.
2. They're stupid.
3. The angrier they get, the stupider they become.

Fuelled by their abject poverty and humiliation on the world stage, Germany was a seething country and people took that frustration out on Jewish people. As Hitler knew, it's very very easy to manipulate public feeling and mob mentality.

In fact, given the same economic circumstances as 1930s Germany, you could create a similar mob mentality here in relation to Muslims.
