if you go to China you'll see signs in English. What's the difference? It's just to help visitors and immigrants get around. It's called politeness.

jno, English is the international language - you'll find signs in English all over the world. To be really polite, perhaps we should extend this courtesy to all non-English speaking people in this country. Imagine the signposts!
Crewe and Nantwich MP Gwyneth Dunwoody today (Friday) gave her full backing to Cheshire County Council over the Polish road signs issue.

Mrs Dunwoody, also Chair of the Transport Select Committee, said: Cheshire County Council is showing a commendable sense of responsibility and I just cannot see why people are getting their knickers in a twist over this simple matter.

There was a clear and urgent need for these temporary signs to deal with a situation before someone was involved in an accident and not after.

The County Council has a responsibility to ensure the safety of motorists and I am grateful we have an authority in Cheshire with the common sense to put safety before bureaucracy.

The purpose of roadsigns is to ensure road safety not to make a patriotic statement

is it true that there is no word for soap in the polish vocabulary?
most roadsigns are visual representations of the danger up ahead. I see no need for translations.
It is somewhere in Cheshire - does anyone know exactly where?
I wonder if there are any roads in Poland with English signs on them?
I'm not sure if helpmetoos question was genuine, stemming from ignorance or a wind up by a racist, but the Polish word for soap is "Mydlo".
Somebody should post some of these signs around Trafford Park. Some half-wit, in their wisdom, has allowed these immigrant visitors to `drive` 44 ton articulated vehicles on OUR roads. Unbelieveable. You could`nt make it up.
naomi I beg to differ, but here on Ibiza I very much doubt you will find any road (or direction) signs in English and not many in Spanish either!
