Some think, instead of some thing, It does my head in. It reminds me of a quote from My Fair Lady. Professor Higgins said " Why can't the English teach their children how to speak " When I was young we were picked up on bad grammar both at school and at home. Does this not happen any more?

Sometimes it's just the sound of someone's dialect, sometimes it's just sloppy English. I like dialects personally but they do lead to lots of ' mispronounciations' if you stand them next to RP.
I say 'summat' but I do agree with you
I think you're a generation too late Jeza. I know loads of people in their 30's and 40's that say things like pacifically instead of specifically and chimbley and loads of other things that set your teeth on edge when you hear it.
If they can't speak properly what chance for their kids and grandkids..
For the same reasons they say aks instead of ask:

1. To annoy old buggers like me
2. To be street
3. It shows their individuality by speaking like everybody else. :)
I agree with you in so many ways Jeza. English is a beautiful language and to hear it so abused is appalling! Kids now all seem to speak as if they were sending text messages - another thing that really gets my goat! Texting! What is the point? Why not actually speak with the person instead of sending blasted texts! (thanks. rant over,)

I have no problems with accents / dialects. I worked with a man who in work insisted on saying watter instead of water. He even wrote it on the container, but only in fun. Away from work he never did this.
And the ubiquitous "could of".
Not exactly about grammar but the saying that really makes me angry is when people say 'he turned round and said, ----------
I always shout at the television, No he did'nt.

So I need to move with the times. In most things I will, but not with the way I speak.

Chrisgel I think you're right. I heard a young Mum in Aldi shout at her child " come here you little c... "
Curious and new (to me, anyway) is pronouncing 're' as in 're the above' 're our invoice', as 'R. E.', apparently thinking of 'i.e.' and assuming 're' is two letters to be pronounced separately, too.
I personally hate ' He's only gone and got...' or ' she only gone and told so and so'. Really is that ALL they've ever done? Really?
Jeza, did you sort your mouse problem out ?
Blimey, Jeza, I thought it was bad enough when I heard a mum say "Stop crying, you t**t," to her toddler.
there's a huge difference between speaking "properly" as in rp, harry enfield stylee, speaking in local dialect, which has an internal and consistent grammar, and the poverty of vocabulary you describe jeza

Wot ah yo on abaht, hippy chick ;-)

Can't find them Sammy. I'm hoping they have left of their own accord. Wishing and hoping anyway. I think I'm kidding myself, but no more evidence as yet.
